They both feel the same and sound the same, but the Thundergun is the way to go.
No real difference in tone or playability, same great pickups, same electronics, but Mercalli sounds like a chicken dish you'd order in an Italian restaurant, and Thundergun is unmistakably a bass name.

Aside from the set neck vs the bolt on and the difference in pickguard shapes, the only other difference I noted was that the Thundergun has the angled back headstock (i.e. no string tree) vs the standard straight headstock on the Mercalli. Now I have no idea if that makes a difference in tone but maybe more of a personal preference thing. Either case, that pic of the Thundergun above is sweet.
I have a Mercall and love it - maybe out of habit I prefer bolt-on necks (in case it ever goes wonky) but honestly, I'd probably be happy with either. I do prefer the Mercalli pickguard shape though.
I haven’t voted because I’ve never played a Thundergun. I’m the proud owner of a Mercalli 4 which I love and I’m in line for a Mercalli 5. I love the look of the Thundergun but given the pickups are the same I’m assuming the sound will be near identical. I have a Decision P too and I just don’t think you can go wrong with any Reverend. Superb instruments. Just superb.
I’m curious about this as well. Can anyone compare and contrast the painted neck vs the finished neck on them?
I forgot mine had a painted neck, but I've played both.
Not as sticky as some glossy Fender necks.

mercalli only because it comes in a 5 string. The thundergun looks sweet too
not at all. reverend makes some of the most balanced basses out there. you can see the pickup strap is located right above the twelfth fret, which prevents neck dive. Also, they're very light.
I've played both, and I'd go with the Thundergun. It's lighter and slightly more resonant.
