Ric 4003 ric-o-sound

Ric-O-Sound jack is a stereo jack. You plug in stereo cable only and get a splitter box.

This is what I was told when I encounted the same issue, I misunderstood the two jacks.

EDIT:
Stereo, not left and right, but more generically it's 'two signals'. The splitter gives mono output of separated neck and bridge pickups.

The other jack is mono output that combines the two pickups like a normal bass.

What you need is a TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve "stereo") plug into the bass & two TS (tip sleeve "mono") outputs:

Mogami Gold Insert TS 06

This one would do it for you, but it's only 6 feet long.

If your 4003 is a 4003S model, they don't have a Ric-O-Sound jack. There will be two completely separate output jacks if your bass has Ric-O-Sound.

Building your own box, like the one mentioned above, is the best bet IMHO.

You could also build your own TRS - TS cable.

Ok.. now I get it .. I thought each output was exclusively for each pickup. I've always used the standard pickup and thought I was not getting the treble pickup signal.. Plugging into a Y jack I thought would give me both pickups but I got nothing.. I see now that the Ric-O-sound output actually provides a stereo of both pickups and can be selected with the toggle switch.
 
BTW, you can't take two outputs & sum them with a Y cable.
NEVER do that, because it would recycle the impedance & burn up the output sources.
In this case you don't have much to worry about, but definitely don't do that in the future.

Hi. I realize that this is a rather old post, but I'm curious what you mean about the dangers of summing two separate outputs with a Y cable.

The link you provided goes to a Page Not Found, so I couldn't read whatever was there.

Are you saying that if one plugged a stereo to dual-mono cable into the Ric-O-Sound output jack and then plugged each of those mono plugs into separate amps... that would "burn up the output sources"? If so, could you elaborate about why this happens, and how, specifically, the output sources would burn up?

The profile you quoted has been inactive for a long time.

There is no problem tying both Ric-O-Sound outputs together with a Y cable. However there is simply no reason to do so, since that is exactly what the standard mono output does.

It's a different matter summing the outputs of two active circuits. AFAIK, active output circuits often have a fairly low impedance, but are designed to be plugged into a much higher impedance. If you connect two active circuits in parallel they load each other down. I believe the level of risk would vary by circuit design. In some instances it might work. In other instances it might sound bad. In other instances it may result in the magic smoke escaping.

There is no problem plugging each output of Ric-O-Sound into a separate amp. In fact, that is how it is intended to be used. I used a Fender Twin Reverb loaded with JBL E120s for my bridge pickup. For the neck pickup I have used a Yamaha B100-115 combo and also an Ampeg SVT with an 810.

Ric-O-Sound is kind of cool, but ultimately I feel it is not enough of an improvement to justify carrying two rigs. YMMV of course.
