You've gotta have the push pull switch. Whichever one you end up with, make certain you get it. I played a 70s 4001 for a long time before putting that mod in and it made incredible difference.

On colour alone, I'd take the Fireglo every time. Like others have said before though, the necks can vary so much, I'd try them both out and pick the one that feels the best. You could also make the decision much easier on yourself, forget the 4003, and instead pick up a lovely older 4001.

The 2007 has a push-pop cap which was introduced on 2006 models onward: you get a larger pool of sound to choose from. Finish wise, both are beautiful in their own right (though I wish they still released AutumnGlo, IMO the best)

Isn't there some kind of new scientific paint that absorbs 99% of all light? Call it "Blackholeglo", so dark it's actually not visible. Slap a "singularity" PG on it, and you got the Cosmic Ric. Failing that, get the Jetglo.

Only combination I would go with except MapleGlo (sorry OzJazzCat)

Push/pull without soldering is good too.

This guy is 71 and selling his collection so I've had the luxury of trying out 5 rics, one an 82 2003 which had a weak sound output compared to the others. Another had an action wide enough to drive a train through, the 3rd had a faulty pot/pickup. Leaving these 2:

Mint Jetglo, no brainer, though maybe you could talk him down on the busted pot one, very easy fix.

Actually, I based my suggestion on the color. Jetglo is awesome. There are so many possibilities.

i hope it's not against the rules here to say this, but there's a rickenbacker-specific forum where you might want to post this question. i won't mention any names, i'll just say that it's a resource for information about ricks, what you might call a rick resource. you know, if you ever wanted a rick resource. which is not to say that it's called rick resource. dot com. but it is.

p.s. this is nothing to do with one year vs. the other, but i'd go with the jet for two reasons: 1) it's "new in case" and 2) geddy lee.

JetGlo... For me, the issue with FireGlo is it has been inconsistent over the years. The older versions look more fire like in color while the newer versions have a pinkish hue to it and is quite ugly..

I thought it just me but it did look more pink than fireglo

I'd go back and play them again. See which one speaks to you. Evaluate their mojo. Go over each one with a magnifying glass to detect any possible flaws (a little tougher to do on Jetglo than it is on Fireglo). When you get home without either of them, which one did you think of/miss more? Which one can you envision yourself playing? I know this may sound strange, but how you feel about an instrument determines how it makes you feel. Buy the one you like best.

Got the jetglo today. Found one difference. Individual poles for the pickups come with 2006 onwards versions of 4003. I'm gonna need it as the E and G string is quieter than A,D by quite a lot. I'm quite surprised by this. It's my first 4003 as I normally play fenders so might leave it to a guitar tech to do.
