BTW, there's a whole thread devoted to Fakenbackers, lots of good info on the arcana of the 70's Lawsuit basses, current Chickenbacker reviews, upgrade ideas, etc. For a while there was some policy about not being allowed to "praise" counterfeit basses, but it only seemed to apply to Fakenbackers, so I don't know what's up with that. Apparently "praising" the plethora of Fender, Gibson, and other name-brand knockoffs was OK, including an entire thread devoted to Greco copies, so go figure:

During the 70's, the brand name El Degas was everywhere here in Canada. You could find copies of all makes (Gibson Fender etc) all over the place. Most were not held in high regard during that time frame, but became desirable a decade later.

That's been my understanding. It also seems like they made pretty good copies and pretty bad copies, depending on which one and how much it was going to be sold for. My bass could use a real setup and some fret leveling, but other than that, it's a really nice instrument.
