Geddy did it with his Jazz. I think your starting point is Rotosound strings.

I don't think Geddy's Jazz sound has ever been close to his Rick tone, it's very different. And Rotosounds aren't that important, maybe back then they were but these days there are so many roundwounds available, many a much better quality that Rotosounds too. Any fresh set of bright aggressive SS rounds should so the trick - I've used DR Hi Beams for years for these types of tone.

I don't think he did. I liked his J bass tone but A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres is my favorite Rush bass tones. He never got those tones again. He got tons of active highs with the J bass, but never that harsh midrange of the Ric. (I think there is overlap of course, but when it comes to the extremes and pushing those harsh tones, the maple Ric has an advantage. I had an Epi Ripper with a thin maple body that was every bit as harsh as my Ric as well)

I find it comforting that even Geddy's Rick suffered from the weak E string

Killer tone though, I was obsessed with that album when I was 15. Learnt it from start to finish... probably not completely accurately!
