Rickenbacker treble cover

(I'm assuming that this is the right forum, since this isn't actually about the pickups; apologies if that's not right.)

I see that removal of the treble pickup cover on the Rickenbacker 4003, 4001, and similar is a thing. Conversely, I see that Lemmy had them install a 4003 pickup cover on his 4004LK to use as a handrest. Is it a pick style vs. finger style thing? What are the advantages either way?

I'm leaving mine on regardless. It's much too cool looking to take off.

I just wish I could find a metal one instead of the cheap crappy chromed plastic...

I took mine off. Cheap plastic. For me. it's in the way of playing in the sweet spot. You can get an aftermarket bezel to cover the hole if you want.
