Much of life is cheaper here than even Raleigh and Charlotte and other NC metro areas. I can be at the beach in less than 2 hours, the mountains in just under 3, DC in about 4. Major concert venues 1 to 2 hours away. And the area is just beautiful. You could do worse.

But, honestly, he's done in a couple hours. So it's not way out in left field.

Beach here in under two as well, mountains in under one. 3-4 hours here puts you in Vancouver, BC. Major concert venues 1-2 hours north and south.
Beautiful area. Looks like much of our life is the same.
Now, about those bananas.....

One acre isn't all that much for a good riding mower if you don't let everything grow 2 feet tall. I think Biggbass covered it very well on page 1. Brand is less important than suiting the unit to your needs and terrain. And if you're ready and able to work on it, you'll be fine.

EDIT: I've used an old Snapper mower and it worked great for me mowing an acre in central Texas 20+ years after it was built. John Deere is always good. Husky makes great stuff, and you will pay for it.

Consider buying used if available locally.

Here's a photo of a similar old Snapper. It just cut and cut - couldn't kill it, and it was as simple as a hammer.

I would avoid anything sold through a big box store (service?, parts?, knowledge?). My dad had a JD GT235 that he bought used and I inherited and it's been running great for 18 years (just do the maintenance), the attachments have worked well and I was able to obtain a well used snow thrower attachment that I refurbished and works like a champ. I wouldn't discount a used JD although a Husqvarna would be nice to have too.

No sir, in that neck of the woods they trade corn, peppers, fruits, and if you really want to make the local lady bartender happy, order them cheesy grits. She loves it when you get her grits.

Do not read too much into reviews, most people only write one when pissed.

When it comes to lawn and yard care with gas engines most people's user error is why they are mad and think what they got was a piece of crap. They think that you open the box put a few bolts into some holes and tighten the nuts then is should work like an electronic item. It does not work that way. I have seen many returned for not runny smoothly, "Did you adjust the idle speed?"
"No. Why would I do that?"

My neighbor was having trouble keeping his mower running. I could hear it bogging down and stopping every minute or less he then would have to restart it again to only have it bog down aging and stop. "Peace of crap". He fought with that darn mower for a few month like that, start uuuh, stop, start uuuh stop, until the job was done.
He hears that I start then do not turn off for an hour or so and wonders what I am using, since it is much better. He is cutting tall grass with the deck all the way down, that will stop it. Told him to raise the deck all the way and go over it a second time with it lowered. He has never had it stop on him since, and now that same mower is not a piece of crap.

Also many mow like freakin' animals, going over any and everything then call it a piece of crap when it breaks.
It is a lawn mower NOT a field and brush and vines and branches mower.

Heck, just the other day I was looking for a new Multimeter and checked for videos on one of interest. There was a video of someone complaining that it does not measure like it is suppose to. When watching the video I am laughing because the guy had the leads plugged into the wrong terminals. :woot:

Read what the problem is they are having and it usually is user error.

Not really related but it's ironic I was checking an authors website to make sure what is the next book in a series since I am almost done with the one I am on. On Amazon's website I see a one-star review which I read; in there the person does not agree with the authors use of tense (first, third, etc.) but what I found really funny is on the reviews last sentence there was the incorrect use of a word that was so blatantly obvious I laughed about the irony and had to reply to the review pointing it out. I am sure the reviewer will correct it and act like it never happened, but I found it funny just the same.

I want to live in the magical place where tuition is only $1k per semester and getting 4 acres cut, edged, and cleaned up is only $100. Is health insurance only $12/mo there?

With that said, my parents have a zero-turn from I believe Zoro. They've loved it from day one, and even now ~10 years later, still love it. They live on about 20 acres, but the zoro is only used for maybe 5 of that. Also, caveat, is that my father is extremely handy, so any issues coming up with it, he'd just deal with it himself, even if it meant fabricating his own parts to do so. Thankfully he's passed a lot of that down onto me as well :p

Do they ride on hills? If yes, side to side, up or down or both?

"hill" is kind of generic, but there are some slopes yes. When we had a normal riding tractor, some were steep enough that I'd sit beside the seat so that it wouldn't tip over. I don't know if they drive up/down or along the slope though... can ask next time I talk to them.

The more I think about it, and the more I read on here, and then Googling some pics I decided to hell with what I was told by the helpful guy, I am getting a Zero Turn Mower. That is what I always wanted and damn't that is what I am going to get!
