Rig setup and Help

First off, you should be able to get as much volume as you want. The RMX1450 is sensitive enough as-is to do fine with the SVP-CL, with or without compressor.

You should consider bridging if it isn't loud enough when at clipping. But from what you say, it seems you aren't getting there.

One important thing to remember about power amps...if you turn them down, you get less volume. Ok it's simple, but a lot of folks just run the power amp at about half on the control out of habit. You don't have to, they don't bite.

If you turn the RMX down to half on its front panel control, the 1.15V input sensitivity decreases by 10 dB. That would sound a bit quieter than "half as loud" as full up.

And, at that point, it takes 3.6V input to drive it to full power (5V peak for full power). If you turn it up, it takes only 1.15V for full power (1.6V peak). That's a big difference.

The SVP-CL isn't really gainy, but it will get into preamp distortion just like an old SVT (which it is based on) and it has enough output to drive the QSC directly. But if you run the QSC with its control down, and the preamp master down also, you won't get loud. Turn something up, preferably the power amp.

Don't use the XLR out, use the regular output and run into the 1/4 inch inputs on the RMX. The XLR is a line out settable pre or post for a PA send etc.

Try without the compressor first, then put that in if you want, and set it up to get the sound you want. The compressor should have an output control to set the level to wherever you want.

But the compressor has the potential to squash your volume too much. Use it if you want, but be aware that you will probably have to turn up the output, because you can squash a lot of the dynamics of the signal with it, depending how you have attack and decay set. That changes your perception of loudness.

That setup should work fine for you (if you like compression). People are using the SVP-CL directly with less sensitive power amps than that one, and are fine.

Sorry, I didn't RTFM when it came to the filters. I just wanted to limit the ultra-low subsonic frequencies. This is definitely a speaker protection feature, but it has come up numerous times with QSC users. When the E is around 41 hz, why would you want to filter above that? There's two sides to every argument.
Personally, I have a 30hz tuned cabinet, so the 30 hz filter works great for me, and satisfies all my issues.

cool , no offense taken ... do you think i ought to try changing my filter to 30hz. ? { it wouldn't hurt the speakers , right ? } as i stated earlier , i'm new to the pre/power amp set-up , so any advice is welcome .
didn't mean to to jack this post , but it might help my own situation...

Its good to know that i can expect the proper performance from the Ampeg to run the QSC. But i was running all gains and all volumes at full throttle. i will definitely remove the compressor from the rack though and give it another go.

Your Avatar Cabinet (just like dep1974's cabinet) can reproduce notes below its rating, but not at the db level that the cabinet is properly tuned to. Try it at 30Hz and see if you get the 'feel-it-in-the-seat-of-your-pants' lows that come below 50hz. Don't crank it first off, and if you find the your speakers are struggling to reproduce those lows, then put the 50hz filter back on.

i just had a thought. what if there was not enough current coming from the wall plate? Lets say the QSC needs more power as opposed to the Crate head. would that cause the Crate to operate normally and the QSC to perform at a lower percieved volume?

....I purchased an SVP-CL from Washington Music Center earlier this week and have had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM. I can't get a "normal" volume from my power amp. My Demeter used to make my pants shake at four. This preamp sounds tame at 6-7. Trying to decide whether to return it or hold onto it.

Thing is, if two people from the same are are having the SAME problem with this preamp....could there perhaps be a "bad" batch from the factory??

Guitar cables aren't designed for a pre signal, I don't know exactly but the impedance of a guitar cable is either too high or too low for connecting a pre and a power amp

?????
Guitar cables have virtually no impedance. They'll work fine for connecting a preamp and a power amp, as long as they're not obnoxiously long, then you might get noise because they're unbalanced. An XLR cable (mic cable) is best in that regard--they're balanced so they're essentially noise-free.

You do not want to use a speaker cable, though.

There's plenty of current available at the wall plate. The receptacle will happily provide as much current as the amp asks for, up until the breaker trips (usually at 20 amps). Your QSC doesn't draw 20 amps even at full volume. So this is not the issue.

Yes, thats where i got mine from. The first one i looked at had physical defects so i wouldnt doubt that something may be up with these.

NashvilleBill, thanks for the words of wisdom.

is there a signal booster or DI that i could use between the Pre and the power amp? Preferably, something transparent that wont color or mess with the tone? Or should i consider the input sensitivity modification?

One other thought....are you using a standard "mono" cable to connect to the power amplifier?

Because if you instead use a cable with a "stereo" or "tip/ring/sleeve" type plug you can lose volume with certain power amplifiers because of the way the power amp input circuit is made.

The balanced input jacks of good power amps are stereo type for balanced or unbalanced line compatibility. They "expect" a connection (either a signal or a ground) to the "ring" portion of the plug, and may need it for proper gain.

The output of the SVP-CL needs only a "mono" plug. It makes no connection to the "ring" of a stereo cord, so use of a stereo cord and/or plug will mean no connection to the "ring" at the power amplifier. That connection will be "open".

The "mono" type plug has no separate "ring". However, the "sleeve" will make a ground connection to the "ring" of the input jack and ensure proper gain in the power amp.

The difference will be at least a 2 to 1 reduction of sound level if there is a problem at all. With some amplifiers it can be even more. And some do not have this problem at all.

Using a standard "mono" cord to connect will assure getting correct gain from the power amplifier.

One other thing:

There is nothing wrong with turning it UP. The master can be dimed if you need to. Remember, amps with no master knob already have their master at full!

Depending on the EQ settings, the preamp can put out lots more than the amp needs, as much as 8V, so the drive capability is there.

don't know if it's been said before, but....

i have an eden navigator preamp into a qsc 1450.

three things that might be messed up:

1. the compressor. it makes no sense to me why you'd be linking the chains together like that; you should only have to use one side of it unless you're running true stereo (which you shouldn't be). take your compressor out of the signal chain COMPLETELY - plug directly into the SVP and see what happens.

2. poweramp. your settings are correct, and i don't think you can bridge it (because if i recall, our qsc's will run at 4 ohms in bridged mode). so you only use one channel of it, and that should be fine with the speakon into quarter cable.

3 preamp (and i think this is most likely). your output voltage on your preamp has to match the input vRMS of the QSC, which is around 1.4V check the output voltage of the ampeg and make sure it's close. there may be an internal switch that has to be changed (because certain power amps, like crown? require a 2.8 V input).

i had a very similar problem. soon as i fixed those things, voila! problem solved.

The problem is a mismatch in output to input voltage.

i am going to take the QSC in to get the mod done and hopefully that will solve the problem.

Thanks to all for your efforts.

Quick note: I also at one point had volume issues with my amp/compressor setup. Not that I was lacking volume, but I was wondering why I had to be at 3/4 all the time.

Well, I soon found out I could bring the rehearsal studio down if I wanted to!

It was the compressor. There are a great many settings there that can very much bring down volume. To not explore this probable cause specifically would be a mistake.

In my particular case, I had the threshold and peak levels all wrong. My ratio was fine though (5:1). But once I turned down the peak to about halfway (I forget the exact value) and had the played with the threshold, OH MAN, a lot of the overdriveness and volume got way more sensitive and just basically good. I have a Behringer compressor too (older model than the one in question). Try adjusting your threshold settings ALONG with the Peak AND the OUTPUT knob. The Output knob is important too. That knob alone should put CRAZY volume back (or more even if there wasn't).

I wouldn't necessarily jump to conclusions regarding epidemic problems with that model preamp or needing to mod an amp. Especially with relatively new equipment, MOST (not all) of the time, it is just settings, settings, settings.

Even for the massively impatient like me!

(btw2, I really want an SVP-CL!) :hyper:
