Rest easy Brent.... He was one of my favorites.

Crikey!

There'd been a lot of controversy surrounding his departure from Mastodon, and a bunch of trash talk - surprisingly aimed at Hinds, from so-called fans - after his comments on being ousted.

Obviously none of us know what went on behind closed doors, in studios, on tour busses etc, but I was really surprised by some of these fans reaction - not taking into account that Hinds suffered permanent brain damage, after being punched in the head, by one of SOAD's entourage, and smashing his skull on the pavement.

This latest news is shocking, and tragic.

I have to admit though, that a part of me is relieved to learn that it was not self inflicted.

R.I.P.

I had the same feeling - I've seen Mastodon live many times, and Brent's level of impairment was the most direct indicator of the quality of the show.
There were times when he was clear, relaxed, having fun and playing like FIRE - and other times when he seemed sloppy and annoyed.

I was hoping that the silver lining of his 2009 traumatic brain injury incident would have been the lessons he learned in recovery and rehab...to channel the self-destructive behavior into healthier outlets.
But his dismissal in March and recent hate-posts about his former band made me wonder if he was headed off the rails again.

I was shocked and saddened to hear that he had died...and relieved to hear that he didn't succumb to despair.

A terrible loss. I've seen Mastodon countless times since 2006 when they opened for Tool. Masto was my favourite band for years and years, main reason was of course Brent, he brought something new to Metal, which is a serious task (!!!) but it just worked. He's the reason I started to learn hybrid picking, and why I formed my americana band I'm now in close to 20 years, because I would have never listened to country, rockabilly and the likes.
This picture was taken backstage in 2007 at the Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium, where I played a show with my then-band just an hour after Mastodon. I watched their whole show from behind the stage on Brents side, a memory I will cherish forever.
