Forgot to mention that there were some anime movies that I watched last year and they have some traces of Lynchian DNA. These were Perfect Blue and Paprika by Satoshi Kon.
Blue Velvet was a matter of debate between the sensitive folk and the people who enjoy being shocked a little, but I knew I was in Good Hands from the very first scene- all the facade and bright colors of an American street parade panning to what is Really going on below the beautiful lawns: chomp chomp chomp of mindless eaters. I also loved his depiction of the Guild Pilots in his Dune (although I found the whole thing to be more comedic and grotesque than necessary, not a Frank Herbert version-the new one is closer to that.) Of course the music of Twin Peaks is a standout. Twin Peaks last season set a bar for atmosphere and concept. Of Course the first atom bomb test let a flood of evil entities into the earthly plane. Explains the last few months.
Got the reference to Kristofferson wrong, forgot it was from the movie (it's been a while).

But I think the parallels were a little too close for her.
She had a point.
After she called it off, I put about 20,000 miles on the Duster in one year, driving around with Don't Fear the Reaper playing on the cassette deck.
Definitely a good call on her part.

I saw TD more than a few times(in a way it prepared me for the CBGB’s era)…
…later on Travis cluelessly buys her The Silver Tongue Devil And I, which demonstrates his overall social awkwardness.

Wow, great scene, (I've only seen the movie one other time since that first disastrous one - have forgotten a lot of it.)
That somewhat disturbed, but slipping a little bit into his madness way that she says "I wouldn't be here if I didn't.", and that barely perceptible low tone in the score as it cuts to Travis' face.
That subtlety of that tone, in a way a parallel with what Lynch does, sets a feeling more effectively than if it was overt.
Watching this, I remembered the guy that Betsy knew from work was played by Albert Brooks. A really smart casting touch.
But yeah, it didn't occur to me until later, that reference to Kristofferson (I was thinking about the way the girl who wisely dumped me liked John Denver.) I was a ragehead, but not quite a psycho equal to Travis. On the other hand, some people I knew....equal to anything by Lynch.
Or like River's Edge. Literally.
This whole thread made me start remembering things from that time. Glad I got out of that town.
There are some places that are genuinely pretty close to Lynchworld. That one was.

CBGBs...I used to read about that place in some NY periodical, (the Voice, the New Yorker, or somewhere), the band-lineups.
Always wished I could be there to catch some of those shows.
You were lucky to be there.

Agreed. Then or now, it's difficult to imagine how that could ever have gotten greenlit at one of the Big Three networks. Yet it was. Almost as surprising to me was that my fairly conservative mother adored that show. As did my considerably less conservative daughter decades later, rather less surprisingly.
