RIP Marco Simoncelli

The helmet was fine- it had nothing to do with his hair, and the fact that it came off was incidental. The clasps AND the straps are designed to break away at a certain force so that the straps don't choke or further maim someone. That the helmet came off is completely incidental and really just indicative of the fact that he was hit very hard in the head.

The injuries that resulted in the cardiac arrest were the spinal and cranial injuries, compounded by the lung injuries sustained by the chest impact.

The helmet coming off was not a factor in his death.

Nothing about safety or "something needing improvement" was a factor here, either. No amount of changes could have prevented this. He low-sided in the wrong place at the wrong time, and that's it. :(

And thats the part I'm struggling with. A low-side is usually the most harmless crash you can have on a motorcycle. You usually just slide straight ahead instead of making the turn. Youll see another million low-side ceashes before you see another one like this one where the bike not only turns, but so sharply towards the racing line. Im still struggling with the physics of how it all unfolded :(

For people that haven't seen the footage (I was watching it live while I ate my breakfast before work) Simoncelli was out of camera shot, then appeared from the left hand side. From what I could tell, he had lost the bike, but rather than sliding out into the gravel on the left, he regained some grip and ended up being propelled back across the track, straight into the path of Rossi and Edwards. It's hard to see exactly, but it looks like Edwards hit Marco's upper back/neck first, and then Rossi hit Marco's head, which pulled his helmet off.

As soon as I saw the helmet bouncing off the side of the track I knew it was bad :(

It should go without saying, but i will say it anyway. Edwards and Rossi were in no way at fault here. Both did what they could to avoid a collision, and were indeed in great danger themselves. They will undoubtedly be feeling horrible, so i would like to squash any suggestion right here and now that they are in any way responsible for what happened. There was absolutely nothing more they could do!

It's a shame, but stuff like this will always happen, there is no way of avoiding it.

He seemed like a really nice guy and it is a real shame to see such great potential being finished like that.

I don't think his helmet was anything to do with it, it looked like it came off before Rossi hit him from the force of the impact from Edwards.

theres a pic here, its a bit graphic like but it shows a different angle of the crash like i say its a bit graphic, i dont mean any disrepect or anything by posting it up here i thought Simoncelli was an amazing rider and was a great asset to motogp, always mixing it up and giving it 100% and will be so sorely missed :bawl:
