RIP William Hurt

His movies that pop into my head first are "The Accidental Tourist" and especially "Body Heat" with Kathleen Turner. More recently he was the creepy Donald Cooperman in Amazon's "Goliath" with Billy Bob Thornton. This guy was really good.

William Hurt: Oscar-winning actor dies at 71

William Hurt, the Oscar-winning US actor whose roles ranged from acclaimed 1980s dramas to Marvel films, has died at the age of 71, US media say.

Hurt won the best actor Oscar in 1986 for playing a prisoner in a Brazilian jail in Kiss of the Spider Woman.

He was nominated two more times in the next two years, for Children of a Lesser God and Broadcast News.

In recent years, he has been known as General Thaddeus Ross in five Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbusters.

I just watched, “Children Of A Lesser God,” the other night.

Another not as well known movie he was in, and was very well cast, was, “Dark City.”

If you get a chance, see it.

R.I.P. Mr. Hurt, you will be missed.

Anyone who hasn't seen "Body Heat", well, you really need to set aside a couple hours in your viewing schedule.

If you've never seen "The Doctor", check it out. He plays an arrogant surgeon who becomes humbled by his own cancer diagnosis. I think it should be required viewing for every med school student. He was very good in it...

He was great in A History Of Violence. Didn’t see him onscreen until the final act, but his short performance made the movie.

Apparently he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for that role...onscreen for a total of just 10 minutes!

Damn!

Definitely one of my all time favourites.

I think the first film I saw him in, as a kid, was "The Janitor", which rather confusingly had a different title in different territories, and has since adopted one that I can't remember, so I never notice it in TV schedules, and wouldn't spot it in a streaming library (it also starred Sigourney Weaver).

Glad to see "Altered States", and "A History of Violence" getting some love here.

He played Richard Feynman in a TV movie about the O-ring failure that caused the titular "The Challenger Disaster". I remember wondering why it was that so many American directors, and actors were so in love with Mark Rylance (and I mean absolutely no disrespect to him), and they were overlooking their own, home grown equal.

He's terrifically understated in "Smoke", which I highly recommend (and its improvised B-movie / companion piece "Blue In The Face" is worth checking out).
