Robbed at Gun Point Last Night

I'm sure if OP had been carrying a gun he could have gone the full 007 on the guy and come out of it well ontop

I get the whole idea of people being able to carry weapons and defend themselves etc. But to honestly think it would have made any difference what so ever when an armed assailant has you at gun point?? A little deluded if you ask me.

RadioactiveGuy would have either had his gun stolen too, or being shot the second the guy saw it. Either way there would be one more armed robber on the streets tonight, and possibly one or two less musicians in the world. Personally, I'm happy he's here today, albeit a few dollars shorter.

Also, gunning down a guy over a couple of hundred dollars and a phone on your person (which is probably insured) doesn't really sit right with me. If the guy was out to kill, he'd just gun people down and take their stuff, it's only a threat. Play his game and then let law enforcement do their job.

Your post reeks of arrogance and ignorance, and it smells like you haven't read anything that has been said in this thread, either. (Un)fortunately, TB isn't the place to discuss such things. Just know that just because you don't understand it doesn't mean it's wrong or bad.

No offense, but that's got to be the worst advice I've ever heard.

If the OP had a 'piece' of his own, had drawn it and tried to use it... he might have been killed.

Morons who go around pointing guns at someone aren't gonna think twice about using them if they find themselves with a potential victim who impulsively attempts to go for a 'piece' in self defense.

Think about it...

Your logic is flawed. They also could have just shot him on a whim, which wouldn't have been surprising, but thank goodness they didn't.

If I had my druthers, every citizen would be required to carry a firearm. Crime rates would plummet. There's no stronger deterrent than knowing that should a criminal try to start something, there's the strong possibility of several upstanding citizens just around the corner who'll gladly put a gun up against the perp's head and put a stop to it.

I apologize if it came across as arrogant or condescending, however I don't see why my outside opinion is in someway invalid simply because it's contrary to the other outside opinions present in the thread?

Based on the information present in the thread, which I have read, I believe it is fairly safe to say carrying a gun in this particular situation would have been in no way beneficial, something the OP himself has confirmed.

Of course there are many other situations where carrying a firearm may be beneficial, I never said there wasn't, my point was this isn't one of them.

I see no arrogance in simo98's post. And I kinda agree with him. I don't see having a gun yourself in that situation would be an advantage. There's a chance he might've scared them off, but carrying a gun might also give someone an inappropriate overconfidence, leading to them putting themselves in more danger. Plus, on a moral level; you don't know the robbers. What if they're just some kids in a desperate situation, somehow forced into doing this by circumstance or others? What if they never intended to harm anyone, but were just stupid and wanted to seem cool to their peers? Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending what they did at all. I'm just saying, the guys are probably not evil. I hope they get caught and punished, but do they really deserve to get shot over it?

Most importantly: glad you and your buddy are ok, OP. Seems like a miserable thing to have happen to you.

Perhaps it's my misunderstanding then. This post of yours clears up some things from your first one that I thought were missing.

The notion that a robber (in the US) only wants your money for financial gain isn't always the case anymore. Committing major felonies is a way for gang members to be seen as guys who are serious about joining a gang or serious about moving up in rank within their gang/set/crew. The more serious the crime, the more credibility the gang member receives. I don't know the extent of gang activity in Australia as it relates to the Bloods, Crips, Latin Kings, MS-13 is the US.

So when you say let law enforcement do their job, that may be to solve a homicide as in the victim getting shot during a robbery.

Sure, there are outliers, and plenty of other bad situations to get into. If they plan to kill you chances are they're gonna do it straight up (Be it with a gun, knife, whatever), but criminals are not known to be the most reasonable and rational of people, so maybe they'll shoot you after you give them your wallet.

Myself, I'd rather go with the option of trying to peacefully diffuse the situation and let both of us get out alive, the money in my wallet doesn't mean that much to me, and I don't feel it's worth killing over. Pulling a gun escalates the situation to a life or death scenario for both parties, and the assailant already has the upper hand.

Of course, if it was quite obvious they intended to kill me, I'd do anything within my power to get out alive, either way you've got a high chance of ending up dead, but it's worth the risk if it means a chance at your life when they're gonna shoot you anyway.

I didn't read anything arrogant in your post, but then again I agreed with every point you made.

I don't see any advantage to having a weapon on you when you're already drawn on.

ok So here is an up date.

First off once again thanks for all the love guy this why I love TB. Doesn't matter if you got held up at gun point or your girl dumps you TBOT is the place to be.

Second. THEY CAUGHT THE @$$HOLES!!!!!!!! I spoke with the detective a little bit ago he said that based on what we and others told them they were able to get a search warrant for a house where they arrested two guys that fit the description and found what appears to be a bunch of stolen property. We are going into the police station tomorrow to ID our stuff and them! It also turns out that these guys were 15 and 16 and that they held us up with a BB gun...

Third. A few people have been asking about what I would have done if I did have a gun on me at the time. I would not have drawn my piece. I already had a gun (as far as i knew at the time) being pointed at me at close range and my best friend standing next to me. I have been trained with firearms and have even done live fire drills that put you under stress so that you can feel what it's like. I know my self well enough that I would not have been able to draw fast enough to shoot the KID with the "gun" and not have been shot my self or have my friend take a bullet.

But for kicks say I was fast or lucky enough to draw and shoot without being shot first. I would have shot a 15 year old kid and may have killed him. Legally I would have been in the right but I would still have to live with that. Taking a life is not something you can undo nor is it an easy thing to live with. However i will say that if i had shot that kid and he had a real gun it would have made it a bit easier to live with but I still would have taken a life.

I am really glad to hear that they caught them.

And I quite agree with your assessment.

1. Trying to get to a weapon and out shoot someone who already has the drop on you is likely to end badly....for you.

2. Yeah, even if one is legally and morally justified in shooting, one still has to deal with the personal consequences of pulling the trigger, especially since they didn't have real guns in the end. It wouldn't necessarily un-justify the shooting legally, if you had every reason to believe the guns were real at the time and that your life was in imminent danger, but it would make the personal consequences higher.

I'm very glad to hear that things are turning out well. :) And I hope that your friend complains to Enterprise HQ about the crap treatment he got from them during this situation.

I may be wrong - and someone with a crim j. background please correct me if I'm wrong - but I believe the justice system will treat the BB gun as though you were held up by a real fire-arm. It's like if you hold up a bank with a toy pistol; it's still considered armed robbery.

Regardless, it's sad when teenagers end up in such a lifestyle as this. :scowl: On a related lighter note, that reminds me of the Ray Charles scene from the Blues Brothers movie. :D

My logic is predicated on the following assumption: That a precautionary approach by any potential victim will probably result in a better outcome in a situation where the assailant, having not set out initially to do the victim any physical harm, then feels compelled to protect themselves from a perceived threat of retaliation by the victim by responding with deadly force. For example, where the victim attempts to produce a concealed weapon in the heat of the moment...

Great news there.

With it being someone who isn't legally an adult, what will happen?

I have been talking to my father who was a police officer for 20 years in the area and he said that depending on their history they will be charged with Armed Robbery and the courts will threaten to try them as adults but they will offer them the option to plead guilty to a lesser crime and be tried as minors. They should see some time in Juvy but it all depends. I'm headed to the police station here in about an hour and I should have more news soon.
