Roger Waters vs. Jack Casady

I agree if you dont already have a P, then get one.
the JC is an awesome bass, but it isnt as... versatile? in the way the P bass is. The P is just a beast in the backline.
I buy MIM fenders quite often, and just drop in a new pickup. usually nordy's. the RW P bass has 1/4lb'ers i believe, which can be easily achieved by buying a MIM P and some SD's.
if youre looking in to saving money, go that way. but if youve got the cash, the RW bass is a purty axe.

Problem is, by the time you buy the quarter pounders, you have almost as much into it as you would by just getting the Waters bass, which also has a brass nut, and those looks you mention. Could put in a brass nut too for a little more $$$ but again by then you almost bought the Waters, the savings isn't that much.

I considered buying this bass and was going to get it until I found an equivalent that I really like. It seems like it would be a great bass.

Find yourself an Ibanez ASB140 Artcore and put in an Alumitone pickup.

Yep for sure everybody should have a P bass, and for the styles you mentioned, the P bass will fit in great. The maple neck will be somewhat brighter and again fit in with your style very well.

The Roger Waters is again just another P bass, much like the geddy lee jazz.
So find a used mexican and upgrade, or just go for the RW, because a maple neck is more expensive if custom ordered, otherwise.
The big deal about the geddy lee is its thinner maple neck and the Leo Quan Badass bridge comes stock.....Yes i know its a jazz. But the point is buying the artist version can sometimes save money in the long run, because custom ordered maple necks are expensive and the leo quan is 100 bucks plus new pups will be 100+bucks.
Not sure of the exact models but i have seen alot of new Fender mexicans with maple necks....and even a White tuxedo maple neck on a Squire!!!

For any American/mexican fender bass i recommend a Leo Quan Badass2 bridge

not completely necessary at first, but once your use to a stock P bass, a bridge upgrade will make a difference in sound, and make setups easy and more accurate.

^ I fell for that advice, and after not hearing any difference I re-installed the stock bridge of one of my MIA P-basses.

BA bridges are not necessary imo.

I'm not actually opposed to getting a jazz, one of the items that made my shortlist was a Reggie Hamilton.

I personally am not impressed by the Roger Waters bass... it's a black/maple P bass with little modifications that anybody can do (black hardware, brass nut, upgraded pickups, 1-ply black pickguard, etc...). As mentioned earlier, it'd be cheaper to just buy a simple P bass and do those mods yourself *OR* if you don't have to have those mods, then you could score yourself a used USA-made P Bass for about the price of a Roger Waters bass.

Interestingly, 3 years ago I built a bass as a replica to Roger's bass. I built it from an Allparts neck, MIM P body, Fender vintage reissue bridge, Schaller tuners, and flatwound Rotosound strings. I had it completely assembled and professionally setup at a local music shop where they also leveled the frets. Cost of parts and labor to do this project was under $1000 total. I still have that bass and I'd put it up against any Fender custom shop bass for sale today valued at more than $2500. Just sayin'... Fender's marketing kills most people's wallets.

I love P basses... great bass that can be played in most genres of music. However I would get the Casady... it is also a great bass with a very usuable tone. It's like the P bass only different.

The RW bass is not really that unique. Buy a used American Standard in black/maple; it's a better investment.

I played a RW bass and it is REALLY expensive for what you get.. and it is MIM.

I love RW, his new signature bass? Not so much.

I just recently got the RW sig for my birthday from my girlfriend and I love it. I had a 2010 MIM precision right before this and the quality on that compared to the RW is quite different. The 2010 MIMs have maple boards now but everything seemed to be falling apart after a few months and the pickup poles for the G-String shorted out. My roger waters out the box felt 10x better in build, quality and of course sound. The maple neck has a finish on it oppose to the MIM which feels cheap. Everyone keeps saying get a used MIM it's the same thing but that's not the case...you will feel the difference in quality and built right away. I put it on par with my new sunburst Geddy Lee jazz...and that's my 2 cents of experience as owner of both basses.

any P bass is great to me. this one is maybe minimally cooler in some ways, but there are many others that could cop it easily. the JC bass I've never played, but heard one live in a medium size venue and it sounded excellent. very warm and deep, yet present.
i'd like to check it out myself.

I would get the Roger Waters in a heartbeat, Ive seen videos and read reviews on it and it was highly recommended, mind ya, I am a Pink Floyd fanatic
