Ron Brown - LA studio bassist

Hi all,

Has anyone got any more information on an LA player called ‘Ron Brown’ - WIlton Felder had mentioned that he was the person who called him to substitute for him on a Motown session which I’m guessing was the I Want You Back session as that was the first group recorded in LA for Motown. He has quite a few credits on bass, including some Jackson 5 and Motown credits as well as credits for ABC Records and RCA.

Does anyone know what happened to him and if anyone has any information on him I would be grateful!

He did a transcription of Can’tbGet Next To You” for Bass Player Magazine September 2004 Along with the transcription was a brief biographical sketch.

His daughter replied to a post regarding him saying that she had fallen out of touch with him and that he was located near Fort Worth when he sold his grandparents house which was the last time they spoke. He was always described as a great guy however slowly towards the late 70s his session work dried up and in the early 2010s he had given up music all together. He was a good friend of the also legendary Wilton Felder.

Ron is an old music friend of mine. Last time we were in touch, some years, back, he indicated he had left Texas and was in the West Indies. Below is an interview I did with him some years back. He was in Texas when I interviewed him. We spoke about his returning to music, but he was not active at the time. He sent me some songs he wanted to get covered, but I have no idea where I saved those files or even if I still have them. -- Would love to hear from him, but not sure if he's still with us. Thanks for this brilliant interview and info. He was a great player and he contributed 'Igor's Chromatic Exercise' through Freddie Perren to the 'Standing In The Shadows of Motown' book which personally has been so useful to me as I'm sure it has been to everyone else. I think I have more info on where he was in Texas and when he left, I'll shoot you a DM with the stuff I found out. Apologies for not seeing this sooner!
