I've always considered Ron Carter's classical background, ( Bachelor/Eastman and Master/Manhattan), an important part of his ability to function in the Post-Bebop period, starting in the early 60's, (and beyond, up to and including the present). His ability to read/hear/function within more abstract, extended forms and harmonies, allowed him to excel, as a sideman, in a wide variety of styles and situations. I sometimes forget that he was only 2 years younger than Paul Chambers.
Thanks.
