rookie needs help!

Long story long: I just picked up a bass so I could record song ideas into my new Boss Micro BR (which rules by the way), and I can NOT get a good bass sound. I play guitar and I know nothing about bass... I ran it through my Boss GT-6 and no matter what I did, it didn't sound right.
Is there anything I can do to improve the sound using just guitar equipment or do I have to go and buy a bass pedal of some type?

I don't know about your multi but you should be able to get a decent sound direct. I have the micro BR and I got some decent bass tones with the on board effects. I used combinations of the clean preamp, metal speaker, eq, and compression. I don't know what bass you've got but with mine (active) I had to turn the input sensitivity to -12. The effects (chorus, phase, etc.) are nothing to write home about and there's not a lot of speaker sims appropriate to bass but you should be able to find something that will work for you.

Yea, since the BR's effects weren't so great I had just disregarded them completely, so I guess I'll experiment a little. Thanks for responding so fast.

A good investment for the future if you will be doing bass tracks, get a tech 21 sansamp di. Used is around $120.
