Hey guys - so im nearing the end of my new home build - in the new place, is a fairly large room - dedicated "music room" - albeit, it will turn into a rec-room im sure.

So ive been online scouring room acoustics, and there is a TON of differing and similar opinions from numerous companies. One company claims their's is THE best etc etc...... upon all this searching and plethora of info (some good, some..meh)...the prices are CRAZY!

I am not a pro musician (nor will ever be)..i dont need pro studio quality - all i need, is to lower the echo in the room. Two walls and floor are concrete. Walls have 2x6" wood stud with 2lb blow foam insulation, with an inner air space between the drywall and stud. (the builder suggested the airspace) so as to not drive my girls crazy from the racket i make.

I am kickin it "old school" and doing a thick under-pad and a good quality commercial grade carpet (tight weave)...the room is 22x24ft with 9ft ceilings. Im thinking all of this "sound proofing" the contractor was doing for me, has actually reversed it's effect. I stand in the room and it is tinny and echo's (lack of terminology)....albeit the carpet isnt being installed until next week - that may help a bit....

So, ive read/watched DIY video's with Roxul and various insulation bats...wood frames wrapped with material...corner bass traps..ceiling "clouds"... material ribbons...big couches etc etc etc.....

I dont want to walk into the room and have that uncomfortable silence that almost makes your ears pop - i just want to eliminate the thin sound it currently has.....AND i dont want to spend a fortune - im a muck..a hack....i just play for my own entertainment.

....any tips/tricks that work without spending thousands on?
 
I suggest waiting until after the carpet is installed to make any additional decisions and purchases.

Also, what the contractor did is for people on the other side of the wall. Nothing to do with helping acoustics in the room.

You could improve sound reduction by gluing up another sheet of drywall using sound dampening glue(green glue?).

Your sound enemy Is bass frequencies. They turn the whole room into a big speaker box. A room within a room with an isolated floor is the only way to get away from that.

yeah - feeling the same. I have put a call into my 3M sales rep - seeing what 3M has to offer for acoustics - wont be cheap but i can purchase 3M at distributor pricing...but i agree - i will wait for carpet. Thanks :)

If you're looking for good acoustics, wall treatments are the way to go.

When I setup our garage rehearsal spot, I went for sound deadening and stuffed the studs with carpet padding and covered the floor and walls with carpet.

I suggest looking into acoustic ceiling tiles as well.

Pics now and later would be good. :)

Acoustically treating your space doesn't have to be expensive if you can DIY it. You can use Owens Corning 703 4 inch rigid fiberglass panels in key locations. They won't sound proof the room, (meaning they won't prevent sound from being heard elsewhere in the house) but they will tame the reverb, flutter echoes, and standing waves. Especially in the low frequencies where you need it the most.

You will want to cover them with a light fabric, something you can blow through easily. It will allow the sound to pass through and dissipate in the panel rather than reflecting back. You can find the cheap stuff at the discount bin at Walmart. Some people like to use burlap or something similar, I used a gray polyester fabric which I found for $1/linear foot.

You can build wood frames for them and make them look nice. I didn't; didn't want the added cost.

Or, if you're using the room as a jam place and not recording/mixing, then you can simply fill it with furniture; ie couches, bookshelves, heavy curtains, etc.
 
The room is 22x24ft... mostly 9ft ceilings. It has some angles in the ceiling ..... i havemt done anything other than bring some of my gear in the room. The basses will be hung basically in that corner...couches will be a few weeks..those, like you say...will absorb some of the echo... but im thinking wall panels and corner traps?

We did this at our rehearsal space that had one concrete wall. Never did open them up at all.

Electronic drums are also something to consider. Direct recording also helps. A vocal booth is a must, IME/IMO.

Your room looks pretty cool. Lots of space for some good equipment.

Thanks. Ceiling is about 12inches of fluffy blown in ceiling insulation plus an air space between the wood and drywall with some "stand off" brackets. (Builder said it helps with sound proofing for the rest of the house).

You can also cover guitar amps with a thick card board box lined with carpet.

And if you have acoustic drums, surrounding them with sound board (to above the cymbals) and hanging a piece from the ceiling above the drums works wonders for sound absorption. Not too expensive either.
 
The DIY Roxul absorbers is the way to go. You can hang them like picture frames and even put prints or a cool fabric on them so they look more interesting.

Grab a cheap measurement mic from parts express so you can see where your problem frequencies are and attack those.

Oh yeah then you could do something really cool with printing. You will lose a tiny bit of efficiency but it’s not a recording studio so who cares. You can even make some of the losses up by creating some side openings in the frame.

There are some simple DIY corner traps you can make as well. They are usually fairly large but will help with bass absorption. You can also just stick a full roll of Rockwool in the corner standing upright and cover it in fabric like a little curtain. Works just as well.

I'm currently evaluating treatment for my own music room. I'm using a Decibel X PRO app on my iPhone to graphically show the frequencies and volume from wherever I hold the phone. I'm going to address it in stages to spend only what I need to. Going with corner bass traps first to address the biggest issue. I'll do one corner at a time and assess. It's a small room so the DIY 24-inchers on the outside face are out of the question. These seem more reasonable. Will do the Roxul DIY wall / ceiling panels after as needed.

I've had good luck with the London 12 pkg. from Primacoustic. They're basically fiberglass panels covered in cloth with a beveled edge. The mounting hardware is handy, especially for the corner traps but the overall construction is simple and a DIY copy would be pretty easy and probably cost half as much.
I took a design off their site and it's worked very well with treating the front half of a 24x12 room and leaving the rear "live" where I have several layers of curtains that can be bunched in to the corners and/or pulled across the back wall.
I wasn't after a perfect sonic environment but just a nice sounding, reasonably quiet room that my family could live with and it's worked very well.

ya theres a place in Markham that sells a pretty good room kit, for 650-950 cdn. ...i may just bite the bullet and get them. Sounds similar to your room... im thinkin bout taking a few of these ideas and combining...good to know about that phone app as well. :)

When you say "...it will turn into a rec-room..." do you mean that you're going to set it up as a music space now, but eventually it will be lose that functionality or possibly be turned into a multi-use room? If it's the former, why bother with any treatments at all? If it's the latter you would be wise to figure out which portions of the room are usable for music purposes and which, specifically against walls, will not be viable for treatments.

No there isn't. That's how it's presented, but there are no opinions about this at all. There is a set of pretty easily understood facts governed by physics that will guide you in the right direction based on the physical room space and what you're trying to do with it.

You haven't provided enough information to know how to do this effectively. Firstly you need to identify where you have problem frequencies as different treatments work better in certain ranges. Secondly you need to identify if you have a wide range of problem frequencies, or a small handful of specific ones. Thirdly you need to identify how the room will be setup so you know where to place said treatments.
  • Are you going to be using this as a room to simply play music?
  • Will you be recording yourself in this room?
  • Will you be mixing in this room?
  • If you will be mixing will it be done via monitors or only ever with headphones?
  • If you'll be mixing with monitors will a subwoofer be involved?
Without knowing any of the above information you certainly need bass trapping above all else. Bass trapping is most effective in corners. If your room is a rectangle with a flat ceiling you have 12 corners. 4 vertical wall-wall corners where you'll likely place most if not all of your bass trapping, 4 horizontal wall-ceiling corners where you may place some bass trapping even though it's far less common, and 4 horizontal wall-floor corners where almost no one places any bass trapping. All three conditions work identically well. At the very least place corner traps in the 4 vertical wall-wall corners either by using a corner trap from a reputable manufacturer (GIK, RealTraps, Auralex, etc.), by building a DIY superchunk style corner trap, or by using a broadband absorber from a reputable manufacturer or one DIY'd 4-6" of Owens-Corning 703 or the Knauff equivalent skinned with a breathable fabric placed so that it straddles the corner. The closer to the full wall height you can get on these the better. Most off the shelf products will be designed for 8' ceilings, and for your needs I wouldn't sweat that last foot. You can save some floor space over a straddled corner by placing panels at 90-degrees and flat to the walls on both sides of the corner. In this arrangement the panel will need an air gap roughly equivalent to the panel depth between its back side and the face of the wall it's mounting to (i.e. a 4" panel needs a 4" gap for optimal performance). The performance will be virtually identical to a straddled corner and will save you some floor space, but comes at the penalty of requiring twice the number of treatments and thereby a higher cost.

Your builder only knew enough to be dangerous by the sound of things. Specifically the insulation. Blown foam, whether open or closed cell actually hampers low frequency isolation compared to fiberglass insulation. Low frequencies will be your largest problem in terms of isolation and by using a foam product rather than a fiberglass one your builder has actually made things a little worse in total isolation not to mention foam being a substantially more expensive product. On the plus side of things the thermal benefits of foam, if installed correctly, are greater than that of fiberglass so at least there's one potential silver lining.

I see in a later post you mentioned "stand-off brackets" installed by the builder. This to me suggests a method of decoupling, but without knowing exactly how this was done it's unclear whether or not it will be at all effective. It would be good to get more information on what product was used and how it was installed to know whether or not your contractor spent your money wisely. I'm not saying this to poke fun, but for your benefit. I've seen some instances where people were able to recoup some expenses from contractors with no sound isolation background who wasted their money. I'm not saying that is the case here, but it's shocking how often it happens. An example scenario; If he used a simple RISC1 channel mounted to the stud and then attached the drywall to the channel, AND this was done for all walls and the ceiling not just a select few, AND there was no habitable space below this room you would gain a modest STC improvement assuming the drywall has a gap at all sides that was then sealed with permanently flexible acoustic sealant. Remove any of those variables from my hypothetical and all that happened is that you lost a bit of floor space and some dollars in your wallet.

This will kill some midrange and treble frequencies while still allowing the majority of low frequencies to be reflected. It's a step in the right direction, especially if combined with bass traps as outlined above.

You've got a few nasty room modes based on those dimensions, largely associated with the nearly square floor plan. Mathematically the 9' ceilings help you a bit, but not by a ton. There's nothing you can do about it at this phase (i.e. the room is already built), but it will help you to understand where treatments could be better utilized.

First-off it's called sound isolation. Soundproofing is a misnomer. Secondly in terms of acoustic treatments and how the room sounds the supposed sound isolation will have no bearing on that, so don't sweat it.

Your first sentence describes an environment that is anechoic. Without spending a ton of cash you're not going to get there, so don't sweat it. Start with bass trapping as outlined above regardless of what you'll be using the room for musically, and then expand on the questions I asked above to get better advise on treatments moving forward so you can maximize their effectiveness as well as minimizing the impact to your wallet.
