One of the church halls I play regularly has an Ashdown MAG300 4x10 combo. I play an EBMM Stingray through it. Both are reasonably good gear, however; no matter how much I twiddle the knobs, I fail to get a good sound. Generally it either sounds wooly or thunderous.
The hall itself is most likely the issue. But I'd like to take your advice. It's about 15m x 17m and 4.5m tall. The floor is wooden, and has a 1.5m deep basement directly below. The stage is a 6inch wooden rise.
My thinking is that there are a lot of flat surfaces and hollow chambers, with little deadening, except perhaps for the crowd

The sound is either wooly or thunderous. If I dial back the bass and boost mids, I get a very nasal tone that doesn't sit well with the music.
I just can't get any definition in the sound without compromising the tone drastically.
Is there anything I should look to do, or am I at the mercy of the room acoustics?
