Room's Note

A keyboard player in one of my bands said that every room has a specific note that comes through clearer or louder. Depending the rooms acoustic properties is it true a specific note will stick out? I've been trying to get into EQ'in my amp to make it sound better but I have no idea what I'm doing or should be hearing when I turn the knobs.

Rooms will have particular harmonic resonances that will change depending on the furnishings, number of people and things in it, acoustic properties of the walls, floor coverings, etc. But you would need to have someone who knows what they're doing to conduct a frequency analysis of the room to determine what "notes" the room responds to. You won't be able to find it by twiddling the EQ on your amp.

It's one of those bits of knowledge that really isn't of much use to most people. Unless you're setting up an environment to mix studio recordings in.
 
Well, it's generally true. Every room has a couple of what's known as "room modes" where the wavelength of the sound (or multiples thereof) coincides with measurements of the room. In particular, the distance between parallel surfaces such as walls or floor/ceiling will do that, and also the distance from one top corner to the opposing bottom corner. This last measurement will always be the longest and hence correspond to the lowest frequency.
 
Depending on many factors, a space may tend to damp certain ranges of frequencies, and other frequencies may resonate, due to the shape, dimensions, and acoustic reflectivity of surfaces. The placement of the sound source plays a role in this. If you produce sound wave that change in frequency, from low to high, (a "sweep"), at a consistent power level, and measure the resulting sound at any point, you will find that spaces will tend to have an uneven response throughout the range of frequencies. These bumps, ("nodes") in the response will have peaks that will occur near notes of a scale that the person is describing as the "rooms note". This is caused in part by reflections, or absorption of the signal, and these effects are dependent in part on the wavelength of the signal. If you encounter this, and find it detracts from the sound you are looking for, you could use EQ, or some type of notch filter to try to counter the effect. If the room conditions change, (say, by people entering, or leaving the space), the response may change. I would not be too concerned about how an empty room sounds, but if you find that a particular performance space sounds much worse than most, you may want to try something to reduce the effect. If you are having a problem with a recording space, you should make the effort to find a solution to room resonance problems. So, room dimensions, shape, surfaces, and contents will all affect the response. Room resonances are not necessarily bad. Think of how a pipe organ sounds in a cathedral. The same instrument would sound very different outside, or in your living room.

this is why recording studios and theatres with good acoustics make a big effort NOT to have parallel walls and/or ceilings to floor - it can be achieved by simply angling a wall or adding baffles at angles

you can do an analysis of a room using acoustic software with apps called ray tracing - these models actually calculate the reflections and refractions and SPLs in specific locations and make recommendations for solutions

also, several pro-audio manufacturers have had 'room analysis' systems for many years - Bose, Meyers, etc. etc. - I've done a few rooms in my time - you set up speakers and microphones in strategic spots and run the software - it can even EQ a system for the room automatically - standard operating procedures these days

in this way you can notch the offending frequencies - some even run in real-time making modifications for the changing environment such as furnishings, bodies, etc.
