Roscoe Club

Great chops, Joe. You’ve still got it! It doesn’t surprise me that they sound very different. The Roscoe really stands out in the mix, helped by the rounds and bumping the mids. I’m not convinced that it sounds like a P bass, though. But it does sound very good to my ears. It makes me want to hear that Roscoe with both pickups evenly blended. Release the Kraken!;)

Thanks Gary. If I get some time tonight (after the G-kids go to bed) I’ll record one with both pickups evenly blended.

Well this is going to be a treat! A classic Led Zep tune with a Roscoe bass track. Thanks, Joe! I'm preparing the popcorn now.:)

Quick and dirty one takes (while the wife gets the G-Kids in their PJ's).

I did one with both pickups full and one with just the bridge pickup ....

IMO this Roscoe excels with tones favoring the bridge pickup.

Enjoy the popcorn Gary!:D

Roscoe Bart’s with Bart 3-band pre. Classic Roscoe sound!:)
Thank goodness. That's what I have ordered on my baby. Don't get me wrong, I have immense respect for Aggie and Nordy components, but right now, on my custom order, I want Bartolini.

Great Roscoe tone examples, Joe. My fave Roscoe Bart soapbar tones usually occur by adjusting the pickup blend potentiometer ever so slightly from center detent to either pickup. Then, add a smidge of Bart 3-band EQ, seasoning to taste, resulting in the tones that I treasure and keep me playing Roscoe.

Totally agree Fritz. Totally different sounding flavors on both sides of the center detent. Adding just a bit of Bart mids is usually the perfect seasoning!:bassist:

So who is using flats on an active 5 string and what kind? I may give it a try. I used my Mustang with flats for a song/songwriter gig yesterday and it sounded so good. I’m sure the bass played a part - passive “p” type sound - So I’m not sure I can get that with my active 5. Thought? Advice?

I don’t understand why anyone would want to take a Custom Roscoe that costs $5000 plus and want to make it sound like a P bass lol. Sure a P bass sounds good but it is the simplest form of a bass guitar and will sound that way with a $200 bass.
Because having spent the $5k for a Roscoe, I don't want to spend another $200 just for that sound ;-)

Steve. The D'addario Chrome Flats and EB Cobalt flats sound really good on active basses. They land somewhere between rounds and a true flat.

My LG is a PJ. I can get a cool P sounding tone out of it, especially when I go passive mode and solo the P pickup. It still has the signature Roscoe growl and tight, full, low B. So it's the best of both worlds I suppose.

Now, to be fair, you'll never get a Fender P to play or sound like a Roscoe.

Here’s the deal...I’ve been playing this ‘74 Mustang for a couple gigs - singer/songwriter and drums, and at church. At the singer/songwriter gig yesterday, it sounded SO good. We did Yellow (Coldplay) and those repeated eighth notes sounded amazing. So yes, for this gig I used the Mustang as it fit and I didn’t need a B string or lots of sustain. Same for church today. My Roscoe also works well for church, just different.

In my cover band, there a a lot of songs that would sound great with that “P bass with flats” sound. Now, I get a decent P bass sound now by using the neck pup and some mid eq. The reason I am asking about flats is not to totally “castrate” my active 5 with rounds Roscoe, but to find a happy medium. I don’t have time or really want to change basses mid set.

I haven’t been a “passive P rounds” guy ever, but experimenting with this old Mustang has perked my ears up a little.
