Rotosound Jass Bass strings: are they?

I mean, does that term imply that they are somehow better or more appropriate for a jazz bass than say a Precision? I know that they are using the term 'jazz bass' in a generic and not brand name sense, but the question still stands. I want flats for a P-bass, and I'm new to bass.

No, the use of jazz doesn't mean anything specific. Rotosound flats (RS 77) work great on a P bass, maybe even better than on a Jazz bass. I have them on both. The 45-105 gauge are very stiff, so if you don't want that (they sound great and I use them too), start with the SM 77 40-100 gauge. They're my favorite at the moment.

That name dates back to the time when almost all pop and rock players, and most country players had switched over to the roundwounds, (Swing Bass). So, the only people playing flats were playing jazz. Therefore Jazz Bass sets. To help people differentiate between flat and round. I think that's about all there was to it.

Hi there,
Lots of famous folk have used them as well. Roger Waters, Sting (Police era), Steve Harris to name a few. Listen to some of their earlier recordings if you want to hear the tone. Great strings! I liked the 40-100 set myself.

Wondering if somebody could help me here since on the topic of rotosounds. I used to buy these rotosounds for years that I thought were 66 swing bass. They had red silk wraps and the strings were a dark gun metal grey color. I just cannot find them anymore. Any help.

Yes that's them! Do they make them anymore? The new pack I bought yesterday was swing bass rs66. And they had colored ball ends, no silk and were not the awesome rough gun metal grey texture. Hmmm

If you bought these, they should have red silks for sure. The colored ball ends is normal, they started that a few years ago.

The RS 77 are great. They thump. They feel really good. They sound pretty even across all strings.
