Rounds to cut and Flats to punch?

yesterday I was in a concert, an afro cuban style band, the bassist played a good 5 string fretless bass with a good amp (big cabinet ampeg) but she used flats, i couldnt distinguish some notes, too muddy and not a lot of punch or thump, like lifeless, the armonic content in a roundwound string is very noticable in a situation when you have a band with a lot of instruments and percution.. even if you have the tone roll off

You have to control the lows when using flats. Donald Duck Dunn didn't seem to have problems with large horn bands

I've had defininition problems playing on badly set up venues like daniva except with rounds. Flatwoulds wouldnt help in such a stuation but there's more to blame than just the string type.
