Rumble 100 or head cor now and get a cab later?

So I haven't been playing bass too long but am going to uni in September,

Before I go I definitely want a new amp, just sold the rumble 15 that came with a pack.

I went to the music store but they only had fender rumble combos, it's the only music store in 50 miles, I like the sound of it but wondering whether it is worth getting that at the end of the month or getting a head at a similar price then a cab next month,

Would rather get at least a head this month but any advice would be helpful :)

Ps also was looking at ampeg heads pf350 or micro vt, or rumble 200 head or something

Depends. The Rumble 100 combo is perfect for uni, inexpensive, light and compact, and will handle a small gig on its own, and a larger one if there’s PA support. If you need more flexibility, a Rumble 200 head can be paired with different cabs for larger gigs, and you can use it for headphone practice without one. But it’s a pricier solution.

Okay so the rumble 100 is sounding like the best option and would be a lot more straight forward but if I got the 200 head does the quality of the cab affect the sound much and is there a big difference in quality? Ashdown do a 210 cab for like 150 so could be an option? Thanks for the help so far!! :)

The Rumble 100 is a fine combo. It does not have powered extension cabinet output jack as the Rumble 200 & 500 combos do. Yes, if you add, say, the Rumble 115 cabinet to the Rumble 200 you get an identical pair of high quality Eminence 15" woofers and the benefit of the cabinet coupling effect. The bottom end is much reinforced. You move twice as much air and gain twice the dispersion. Plus you gain a good solid 4 or 5dB of SPL along with a 60 watt boot up to the full 200 watts. Which is nothing to sneeze at.

Okay that makes a lot of sense, so is it worth saving for the rumble 200 combo and that way if I do want to upgrade in the future I can just add another Cab? Or just get the 100 for now and if I need more in the future look at something higher watts?

All standard Rumbles from the 40 and up share the same preamp, so the only difference in sound quality would be from the speakers. The 100c has a 12" driver, the 200c a 15" driver. It’s all down to personal taste, really.

If you got a 200 head and used it with a different cab, say the Ashdown 210, it would affect the sound. Not adversely, necessarily, but it would sound different.

If you get the 200 combo you can add another cab later. @Linnin is right about this not being possible with the 100. There is also the difference in size, price and weight to be considered. For maximum portability and the lowest price, get the 100c. For maximum power and flexibility get the 200c, if your budget allows it. Or get a 200 head, and take your pick of cabs.
