Rumble 40 line out problem

Greetings. I play through a rumble 40. The wife has asked my to "TURN IT DOWN!!! LOL. So, I have hooked up an xlr cable to the rear panel line out and into my Focusrite 2i2 interface with instrument level turned off. My goal is the hear my bass and something playing on my PC (backing track) and listen through headphones, but no sound in the room. There is signal at the interface when the amp is on and sounding in the room, but the signal is gone if I turn down the master volume of the amp. AI told me that the line out is pre-master volume but that does not seem to be so. Also I am not sure if I will need to run the signal going into my interface through an amp sim on my PC or whether I should be able to hear my bass just plugged into the interface and the headphones plugged into the interface as well. I am a complete newbie with this type of goal, but need to solve it to save my marriage (wink). Thoughts????

plug some plug to the headphones out, it will mute the speaker. just anything, like an aux cable
Cool, that helped! Speaker now off. So now I can still see signal at interface. Newbie question here, do I now need to turn on an amp sim to be able to hear the signal in my headphones attached to the interface?

The Line Out on the Rumbles is post EQ and fader; somewhat notoriously so. :meh: I'm surprised Al didn't tell you that if he's so dang smart. :roflmao:

You could also feed the audio output from your interface to the aux input of the Rumble and monitor by plugging into the headphone out on the amp.

You don't need to do anything with the Sims unless you're just determined to -- it won't be necessary just to hear your bass.

Not sure what you mean by "fader". Is this slang for the master volume? I would rather have the signal from the amp go into the interface and use the headphones there instead of breaking down my connection of the interface to my studio monitors. Is there a way to make that work?

AI is wrong as much as it is right, in this case it's wrong since the line out is post eq.

Plug a trs cable or headphone adapter into the jack to turn the speaker off.
Yep, got the speaker off now with that method as suggested by Aloe. Interestingly the foot switch turned off the speaker but also the signal to the interface.

Ah, yeah, Photo. Lots of us got those, most with such hyper-sensitive ears. 😉

Yes, a plug in the Rumble's headphone jack is the only way to mute its speaker.

Yep, AI lied to you. Both the FX Send and the XLR Out are post-EQ & Master(volume).

Yes, your setup should work, but I'm not familiar with that interface to guide you there. But I know there are Focusrite interface users in the TalkBass Fender Rumble Club that could help!
And, the XLR Out signal shouldn't need any additional sim because it has its own built-in cab sim circuit! 🤗 That's not the case with the FX Send signal, though.
... ... ... You could also feed the audio [backing track only] output from your interface to the aux input of the Rumble and monitor by plugging [headphones] into the headphone out on the amp. ... ... ...

This would be a simpler setup for hearing your playing, but not for recording the session, if you want to do that.

Great detailed answers! Heck I think the thing to do is just abandon using the rumble amp line out and just plug my bass into the instrument input on the interface and use my amp sim for sound and abandon the complexity.

Here is a corollary question. Thanks for the link and suggestion to the Rumble club. It looks like this is just one humongous thread where a lot of people are "joining", but perhaps this is also a thread where one can just hop on on the last page posted and ask any question to that group. Is that how that works? Not a separate individual Rumble forum? Thanks for helping! :)

Yes, that's how the Fender Rumble Club works. Ask and ye shall receive.

Well I had to chuckle. I inputted my bass into Guitar rig 6 bass amp and it sounded just awful. Strange artifacts and a weird experience of adjacent notes sounding somewhat the same in pitch. Just weird. Abandoned that experiment! Back to playing through the amp itself with headphones and might take G-dog's suggestion and just get the signal of the backing track from my PC out to the aux input of the rumble and thus all will be quiet in the room but OK through my headphones used out of the amp. Sheesh what an adventure all to save my marriage. LOL

🧐 Point of order: @Redbrangus made that suggestion here first. 🤔

Your amp doesn’t need to be involved. You can plug right into the 2i2. I do it all the time.

Bass straight into 2i2. 2i2 connected to computer. I play music from spotify on my computer and everything comes out of the 2i2 into whatever is connected (headphones or my monitors)

The problem isn’t the amp. It’s the wife. Get a new one.

You know, you don't need an amp at all with the FocusRite Scarlett 2i2 Gen3 (or gen 2 or 4 for that matter). You can plug your bass directly into the interface using the 1/4" plug on your instrument cable. Both of those inputs will take either an XLR or a 1/4" plug. I run my bass into one and select INST (Instrument option) and my mic into the other one and make sure the Instrument light is off on that one. I can hear everything I play and/or sing just fine as I play along with music on my computer. You can adjust the volume of your headphones using the small control above the headphones plug. You may need to fiddle with the volume on your computer so it doesn't bury you in the song.

When you are recording things be sure to have "direct monitor" on so what you play syncs up correctly with what you are hearing.
