Rust on my cone?

I have an 80's era Peavey TNT 130 15" combo amp. It is in pretty lousy condition, so I decided to take it apart. When I took off the grill cloth, i noticed that there was an accumulation of rust spots on the cone. IF I were to try to clean it off with CLR or something of the like, is there a possibility in which I may damage the cone? Has this happened to anyone else?

Aside from this, I also plan on vinyl spray painting the tolex white and spray painting the inside of the cabinet red. What are your thoughts on this?

Your cone doesn't see much use does it? Lots of guys polish theirs from time to time during dry spells.

Oh, wait, you're talking speakers!

On a speaker, I'd be afraid to try anything with any moisture trying to clean it, it's paper after all. I'd go with the previous idea, probably OK to carefully, gently, wipe it with soft cloth or paper, but I'd avoid water or liquid cleaner...maybe an expert will have abetter suggestion.

Thanks for the tips guys. No it was never in a flood, but the place we used to practice was a humid furnished over sized tool-shed where we would smoke like chimneys. "If it ain't broke don't fix it." I think I like that attitude best. haha.
