Rustee Allen's tone on Babies Makin' Babies

Does anyone know if Allen ever played with a pick? Allen's tone on Babies Makin' Babies very much sounds to me like a combination of a pick, flats and a P-Bass.
The style sounds very much like how Bobby Vega plays on some of Sly's songs. I say this because I believe I'm hearing what I think are percussive ghosted notes played at various points in the song, keeping the groove going kind of like how Vega does. It all sounds more pick than fingers, but I could be very wrong. I realize that this groove can be successfully played via either style (fingers or pick), but I'm curious as to what Allen did. Anyone have any insight?
