You don't need a finer rasp. Just lighten your touch when you get the profile right, and reverse it across the ridges you left behind, then use a scraper and sandpaper. A scraper will take those grooves off pretty quick.

thanks that really worked great! within two hours i have the neck in a great shape and now its supersmooth thanks to the superfine sandpaper sanding

how do you apply tung oil? with a paint brush?

ps: its got a spector/warwicky kind of a tone which is a great change from my usual fender style

i think tung oil is a good idea, i just gotta soak a rag in it and then wipe the neck, that simple!?

Apply it on with a rag thick, let it soak in for a few, then wipe off the excess. Don't let the oil dry on the surface, or it will get gummy. For oil, I use this schedule:

1. Once a day for a week.
2. Once a week for a month.

Yes. Tung oil is a penetrating finish rather than a sealing finish like polyurethane or nitrocellulose. You want each application to soak in and cure. That's why the wiping on then wiping off any excess after a few minutes. You want the oil to build up in the pores of the wood.

suggestion. On the back of the neck, draw two lines, parrallel, left and right of center. How far apart the lines are is up to you. But, keep it at a about 1/4 inch or a little more on each side of center. Then file down to these lines and you will have taken off an even amount of wood from the neck. Then you can shape the edges to feel the way you want. This way, you won't go deep enough to get into the struss rod channel.
