Sansamp DI

Get a recording interface with software included. Most of them have some sort of SW included nowadays. That M-Audio one is $120. And, while I don't know if the whole ProTools M-Powered SW supports VST, it does have some basic SansAmp stuff included. That'd definitely get you started.

I love my BDDI for live stuff (bass and acoustic six-string guitar), but you wouldn't need one for this application. Get the M-Audio thing, and you have a total solution.
