I don't play well.
Hi Folks - I was wondering if anyone can give me some insight here. A few weeks back I picked up a really lovely (looking and sounding) G&L SB-2 from a local shop. Sounded awesome in the shop and also awesome when I got it home.

I played the crap out of it for a week or so and brought it into the practice studio and in the middle of the session started getting some major hum that would only go away when I touched the bridge or (to a lesser extent) the strings and knobs.

After bringing it home, I didn't notice the hum any more, so I figured it was just a fluke at the studio. But, over the next couple of weeks I started noticing it at home and the studio more often than not. I haven't isolated it yet, but I have noticed that it -seems- to occur after fiddling with pickup volume.

Anyways, I took it back to the seller and asked him to once over it, check grounds etc. We plugged it in at the store and could -not- reproduce the hum. I also tried it with my own cables to be sure I didn't have a defective one, no hum at all. He had it for me the next day and said everything was in order, but he'd gone ahead and replaced the shielding and tightened up the 1/4" jack. Plugged it up at the store and again, no hum.

I brought her home and hooked up and everything seemed kosher. But, within a day, the hum is back at home and the studio and it's now pretty consistent. With both pickups turned all the way down, the hum is still present but very light. With them turned full-on it's quite notable. I usually run the neck full-on and the bridge about 1/3 turn from full because that gets me the tone I like.

So, can anyone help me on this? Is this normal for this bass? Do I just have crap power? Is it possible that one of the pots is going bad somehow and needs replacing? Any other ideas or suggestions on what to do, where to go, etc?

Thanks!

FYI - Tonight I removed the bridge, stripped a fresh bit of ground and attached the ground to the bridge with some all-parts copper shielding tape. Hum is still there with the P-pup all the way up. With the J all the way up, I get the expected hum that does not go away by touching metal. If I back the neck and bridge off a bit the hum is significantly reduced, but even turning the pups all the way down I can reproduce the "problem".

Is this just normal for these basses? If it is, so be it, but if it's not, I want to try to resolve it.

More info - I have fluorescent lights in my place, so last night I turned them all off and tested the bass. Still the same. Also tried a ground lifter with no improvement.

Finally, I tried running the bass into an ME-20B with no amp connected, just headphones and I still get the same result. Interestingly, when I moved the bass away from my body the sound decreased.

Am I creating the hum? Does this mean I need more/better shielding? Am I just obsessing over nothing? I've never gotten this noise from my (unshielded) jazz bass in the same locations.

Hi - thanks for the reply. I happened onto a new power strip with a ground indicator and found that I was using an ungrounded plug in the studio, so I wandered around until I found one that was grounded. Unfortunately, still got the hum :/

Hi, I recently purchased a new SB2 and encountered the same issue. The hum wasn't there in the shop, but I plugged it in at a recording studio and whaddya know...I realise this is an old post, but just wondering if you came up with any solutions? I've tried going through a DI box - no joy. Like you, I'm wondering whether this is just something I have to live with. It's still a beautiful instrument though...

Thanks,

Chris
