My name is Al and i'm from upstate NY near Ithaca and Cayuga Lake.
About 20 years ago a chanced upon a wayward 1984 G&L L-2000 bass that i loved the look of at my local shop. All natural, gloss finish, black hardware
I was told it was brought in as trade for another bass and that they were told it had sat unplayed in it's case in a closet for many years s the owner had passed. I got it rather cheaply.
It has minor wear and except for 1 ding in the body and the neck problem. I'm assuming that sitting in its case under tension all those years and many climate cycles caused the neck to Ski Jump, as the truss rod wont effectively counter the bow and and it will re-bow itself rather dramatically overnight. It's a sad case and one i'm not sure can be recovered.
Now, i'd love to just send her back to Fullerton and get a new neck fitted. But i'm retired on a fixed income and really cant afford to ship the bass there, even if i could scrape up the money for the neck and i'm not really comfortable shipping this heavy bass across the country. too much risk nowadays with any carrier.
I've fitted a few necks before and can mange that myself.
I have found a G&L Tribute SB-2 neck that has already been drilled to fit a 3 bolt bass. I've looked all over several forums and have found very little on grafting a Tribute SB-2 neck onto a Fullerton made L-2000. I'm not looking to make this bass anything other than a player.
I've been told they aren't compatible by the person wasn't sure and i read that some people say it throws the intonation off ( i don't think i'd believe that if they are the same scale length.)
According to what AI on google tells me they share the nearly same heel dimensions as follows:
The heel width of a 1984 G&L L-2000 bass is 2.5 inches (63.5 mm).
The heel length is approximately 3.875 inches (98.4 mm).
The G&L Tribute SB-2 bass features a standard 2-1/2" (63.45 mm) width neck pocket for the heel. This is consistent with other popular bass models like the Fender J and P basses. The heel length is 3.875" (98.4 mm), and the pocket depth is 5/8" (16 mm).
My question is: Are they compatible? Have any of you seen this done? Any and all advice and insight welcomed.
