SBMM Ray34 (2013) vs Sire Z3

Hi all, contemplating a purchase between these two models. Been really gas’ing for a stingray bass (budget can’t accommodate a US model). That being said, looking for opinions hopefully from those who have had the opportunity to play these two. Here’s my options:

Sire Z3 - brand new, I’ve tried it in person and found it to be a really good bass. Wasn’t able to play around with it for too long, but I wasn’t too sold on it nailing the stingray tone. It was there, but it was lacking that special mojo I was looking for.
Ray 34 - second hand, 2013 model. Natural finish with maple neck. Looking at a deal I’m okay with but about ~200usd more expensive than the Z3. I’ve heard the models from that year are really good, but I won’t be able this try it in person though so I’ll only be buying this blindly. I’m assured it’s in good condition though.

Would the extra money spent for the ray34 be worth it and would it get me closer to an authentic stingray tone? Or should I save my money and settle for the Z3, just spend more time tweaking the preamp?

I would buy the Z3 and learn how to make it sound like I desire. Variables are so many: effects, gain-master levels, tone controls on the amp. Your touch etc. It will be brand new and completely yours. No scratches, dings or any doubt-regrets. And (call me naive) the fact that Marcus Miller likes it.

Both are good options. The Z3's preamp is nothing like the Stingray one, but this doesn't mean it's bad. Both are Stingrayesque enough.

In general I'd rather get a bass I have tried and tested than one I haven't. If you like the Z3 you tried, that's what I'd recommend.

I have the Z3 and let me tell you that it's better than current SBMM. Just recently a friend of mine bought a Ray35 and it came with a broken tuner which is a common complain about these basses.
The Z3's a great bass on its own and you don't feel the money diference in construction quality nor sound. In certain aspects it's even better (the neck is amazing).
If you can get similar quality at a better price then it's an easy decision.

You say the Sterling was "$200 more", but what prices are the basses in question?

BTW, I have both a Sterling and an EBMM Stingray, and they sound pretty similar. Not identical, but pretty darn close.

The Sire will have a more hi-fi tone to the preamp, (like the SR 2-band) and the 5 string models will have the benefit of dual graphite rod reinforcement. The rolled fretboard edges are very nice to have, too.
