Greetings,
So I've been thinking about how to change up my gear to better accommodate some aging hands, leaning towards reducing scale length from 34 to 32, possibly 30. But I started thinking maybe getting tighter on string spacing may make more of a difference (for me) than scale. What tends to wear me out (fretting hand) is the constant octave work in a lot of dance music I play. I do need a 5 for that band.
I have a Warwick Streamer STD 5 string that's been sidelined for quite a while (was my first 5, used in original band and a little cover work early 2000's). It has 16.5 mm spacing...I have been playing Fenders with 19, 18, and a G&L that's 17. Rehearsed with the 'Wick and it didn't feel too awfully tight & weird like it did the last time I broke it out, I think I'll gig it tomorrow for the hell of it...will report back.
So, perceptions on scale vs spacing being more of a hand reliever for you? Curious what ya'll may feel on that, I know we tend to go to scale length as a default.
Peace,
MJ
