Scott Thunes and his tone

As a P-Bass 'lifer' I have always appreciated Thunes (Heavy Duty Judy now playing) use of a flanger to aid in the development of his characteristic tone. I've of course spent some time online searching for specific reference to the unit itself and haven't turnd up much other than it having been 'a cheap unit'. I've been experimenting with a Boss BF2B, using both roundwounds & flats through my Redhead and although it's cool, I'm somehow missing the mark.

What is the 'Manual' knob for?

It seems asthough the slowest 'rate' setting is close...but not quite it.

Perhaps it's not a flanger? or a different brand!?!

The "manual" determines how "far" or wide the flanging effect will "travel"(high to low)(sort of like a "depth" control. I think of it as "pulse width". More = wider.

In the April 2009 issue of Bass Player Magazine, they did a transcription of Thunes' bass line to Alien Orifice. It lists the gear he was using with Zappa at the time as "BMG amplifiers with Meyer 15" PA speakers and a Boss CE-2 Chorus pedal given to him Pia Vai"
