Double Bass Selecting an EUB

Hi there! I have played BG for over thirty years and want to add an EUB to the arsenal. I have a new instructor I am starting with who is very proficient on DB and am starting lessons next week. I play jazz and if you asked my what is prompting me it is the Eberhard Weber sound. I plan on learning how to do some arco stuff. Anyone have suggestions on a solid bass to start with, and any other suggestions are appreciated. I want to keep my initial investment $1500-$2000. Thanks!

Hi Jon.
A big part of Weber's sound is the electronic stuff he uses, and a mix of magnetic pickups, which gives the fretless character, and piezo pickups, which gives the acoustic, more DB-like character.
A fretless with similar tone shaping would approximate that tone, but I understand you couldn't bow on it. :)

Did you read some of the megathreads here?

The NS Design EUBs seem to be popular, and are well distributed.
The Ergo EUB had good reviews, and is even less money than your budget.

Regards,
François

NS has just about anything you want from inexpensive to expensive with many options in between going from NXT with dual piezo with a switch to CR-4T with the same piezo with a blend knob like mine to the more expensive M models that add the magnetic pickups again with another blend to the most expensive American/euro models with all of the above with a really cool concave back of the neck that mirrors the fingerboard and some of those have carbon fiber laminates. I just did a gig today with a few other bands at a local bandshell that one of the other players who studied at University of Miami and is now an instructor played my CR-4T both pizz and arco and really liked it. He grabbed my bow and started playing backup strings melodies to couple of guys in a rock duo before they figured out where the melodies were coming from. Kind of funny watching it go down. He was impressed as was I. It's always kind of neat watching and listening to someone play your stuff!
