Selling out :(

Ok here is the deal. In the past I have been a causal hobby guitarist, playing mostly rythym parts and what not, while taking lessions and learning as much as I can about theroy. Also I have had seven years of piano instruction, a year of percussion, and spent four years in choir. Now lately I have been getting the weirdist feelings, i feel that I want to adopt the bass, and possibly pick it up as my primary insturment. So I was wondering if any of you fine gents had any thoughts on the matter, suggests and what not.

Also if any of you could suggest some gear I should look into. I would prefer (I think) a 24 fretted bass with five strings.

Welcome to TB - you've come across a great resource. There are lots of knowledgable and helpful folks around. As far as gear goes - I would recommend buying used as opposed to new where you can. You'll get more for your money and can likely sell it down the road without taking a loss should you choose to upgrade (or sell should you discover bass is not for you) - most bassists eventually seem to do one of these two things. If you can give us an idea of style of music you are most interested in and what kind of budget you are looking to hit, we can hopefully give you some helpful advice...

I started playing guitar first. I have been playing for 10 years. I would always noodle around on friend's basses. I also played baritone sax in high school, and always had the bass lines. Just recently I finally broke and traded in my guitar rig for a bass rig. It was the best decision ever. I LOVE BASS! I wish I would have done it a long time ago. Just follow your instinct and do what you love. Best of luck to you!

Bass is an excellent decision. Unlike guitar, bass is much more versatile in which you can play MANY different kinds of music, because in almost every musical situation, you will find a bass of some sort. Not the same for guitar. So enjoy, and have fun learning an excellent instrument.

Heh, and also, chicks dig bassists more than guitarists for several reasons... :D .

o yea, ive also become picky about my gear (hazard of being a guitar player with the internet and to much time he cant spend practicing on his hands) so i dunno..... id like to get a warwick (a friend of mine had one, but I doubt I could afford one)

wow, what a sell-out.

just kidding. i came to bass after about 20 years of playing other instruments (including 12 years on the drums).

'cause the bass is just THAT cool. :bassist:

i fail to see how you could consider this "Selling out". if anything, it just proves you love music. :)

i'd say look at an essex 5 or a mim jazz 5. not 24 fret necessarily, but great inexpensive basses both.
