Selling shirts

Not really "management" per se but it is part of running a band

What do you sell your shirts for at the merch table?

I've been messing with this custom design company and the prices of a few of the shirts I'm looking at would have to be sold for 15-20 each to make anything.

Do you think this is reasonable? I haven't been to a show and bought a shirt in a long time so I'm a little hazy as to what I payed the last time, it seems a little much to me.

Let's say the shirt itself is of high quality with a fairly intricate design and after a show you might think "they were cool, maybe not zepplin but cool" but your girlfriend/wife was like "ooh they sure were groovy I'll get my man to buy me a shirt!"

Would you pay 15-20 in that situation?

you should specify nation/region when asking about reasonable prices (this board is international)

IMHO $15 USD is reasonable, $12, even better...$20 will make people balk.

What you really must do Is figure the cost per shirt to you and price to sell based on that.
I'll query my band mates for our numbers

Shirts are a double edge sward kind of thing. You kind of need to order a ton of shirts to make the price low enough that you can sell them at a price fans want to pay and make a profit... but they you have so many shirts you will never sell them all, or the investment cost is too high. On the other hand if you order a small batch, they cost way more, and then you have to sell them for so much to make money that nobody wants to buy a shirt that expensive.

My band has had pretty good luck buying the shirts ourselves and finding local dudes to screen print them. Have done this twice already, and about to design a third shirt!! We sell em for $15 bucks - which people seem to be OK with. For a longsleeve, it's $20. Sometimes we will let them go for $10 depending on the situation.

Our last batch I ordered about 50 blank shirts - good quality Hanes, long sleve, short sleve, and in a bunch of colors. We got a local buddy of ours to screen em (he owed me a favor), and we have about 25 left that we are going to come up with a new design for...

Our first order we got really cheep shirts - you just order the size and color, and they send you a mix of brands that are "B-stock." Not irregular, but just didn't make the A-list for what ever reason. Our second order, we specifically got a name brand shirt and paid more. I though people would go for the better shirts, but more people go for the mixed ones because of the cool design... so I say design trumps shirt quality... unless you get really expensive shirts - American Apparel - in which case advertize them as such, and people will buy them for the brand name... like my girlfriend who bought an American Apparel concert shirt from a band she doesn't even like because she likes the shirts.

When it comes to regular T-shirts, I think a good design is most important. And SIZES!!! I turn away a lot of sales because we don't have your size. That sucks. I got more mediums - thinking most people are medium... a lot of dudes want to buy shirts, and they wear L and XL.

US....the numbers have been figured, which is how I got 15-20

KOOZIES are great too!! Really popular (at least in Texas). They are small, easy to sell, and great for "hand outs."

We have a pricing structure on ours 1=$3, 2=$5, 4=$10. People almost always buy more than one, and if they just want one, they just give us $5 and call it cool.

We sell our shirts for $10-15 (discounts for 2 or buying CD/shirt combo). We found this place : Link Removed For screen printing, their prices are tough to beat. I have no affiliation with that business other than being a relatively satisfied customer.

I recently just made a bunch of tees for my band's ep release. Total cost to make them was about 55. Stencil + cross stitch fabric/frame. Ended up doing name your price t-shirts along with the cds. Ended up getting much more in return. (quantity was 15 shirts, 1 ink color)

Went ahead and found a distributor of blank shirts, upped the quality of the shirt and got a screen/emulsion etc. Basically screening them myself (it's stupid easy if you have the time). Did that for this past weekend, started getting compliments even! Cost for 25 shirts, 1 ink color, 1 spot = $105

if you're confident that the band will be around long enough to sell more than a few dozen shirts, buy in bulk and then you can keep costs down. Also, I would think of shirts as much as a form of promotion as they are revenue. If you just break even on them but people are wearing them in the street, you effectively have free advertising.

I've just started selling band t shirts (just set up this online thing too [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] to see if it helps). We payed about £4 for each shirt and we're selling them at £8. We might put that up to £10 if they continue to sell as well as they have been - they're good quality shirts and I think the design will be popular. We were very silly in not buying enough small shirts - we were wiped out after our first gig! There are more women than you think at these gigs! We are looking into getting womens vest tops as they're much more flattering - but for some reason they're way more expensive to make! I don't get it!

Sounds like a good price dude, as long as the t shirt itself looks good. One colour printing is definately the way to go for cost efficiency! I've been looking into other types of merch but t shirts are definately the most popular and can be so cheap to make!

I'm also doing a research project on band merchandise, if any of you are willing to partake in my survey to help me out that would be awesome!

I am very happy to share some of my results if you are interested. Sorry a lot of the questions are a bit awkward if you are outside the UK!

Our shirts cost us about $8.50 per. We will sell you a shirt for $15. We will sell you a CD for $10. We will sell you a shirt AND a CD for $20. In fact, if you buy a CD for $10, we will sell you all the shirts you want for $10 each.

Decent weight material with front-only 2-color design. Oh yeah, we have found we sell MANY more black shirts than any other color, so we only sell black shirts.

You sort of need to go shopping and see what T-shirt design is trendy. Bright colors, busy shirts, more basic etc. I have friends that wear "cool band shirts" but couldn't name you a song from the band.

We were getting solid color shirts printed with one color for $5. Really we'd let them get go for anything above $5, but the "sticker price" was $10. We'd throw a few out to the crowd at bigger shows. We figure merch is advertising, so as long as it pays for itself, it's cool. I'd rather let loose a shirt for $5 than have it sit in the trailer not getting seen by anyone.

Get a ton of smalls and mediums, but also carry a few bigger sizes. Who wouldn't want a beer guzzlin' biker gang all wearing matching shirts of your band?
