Sellout or integrity

i take issue with the word sellout (altho' i'm not offended, non-PC club! ). who cares if britney is popular? her songs were good catchy pop. ain't nothin wrong with that.
besides, who decides who is a sellout? a critic who has never played an instrument? a musician who is jealous because he/she has never played an arena? an 'artist' who rags on a GB band 'cause they're making money playing 'brick house.'?

meh, music is fun, but for a lot of people (myself included), it's a business. we want to make money. nothing wrong with that.

If you specifically mean the Zooropa and Pop albums, then yes, absolutely. I'm a big U2 fan and can't stand those.

If I'm not enjoying it then why would I bother? For the money? I've already quit one good paying job because it sucked. I wouldn't be in the "sellout" band described. Not because of the label, but because I play music for fun and once you take that away, I'm out. Sorry this post didn't deliver by my own personal standards of goodness. I'll try better next time.

It depends. I'd like to ride the famous band for the experience, but if the music's not moving me I'd have no problem switching gears for another band.

Possibly, but that's why I said that if they are "buying your music AND really enjoying it...." If someone buys a record, listens to it and actually LIKES it -- that is, it really does "speak" to them -- then who the hell are you to tell them that they're wrong?

Because, generally speaking, 7yr old girls aren't exactly dead on.

It depends on how you look at your music, I am an artist and also a professional. When I am hired to do a gig, my job is to do everything I can to support the artist I am backing up and play what they want. I don't consider that selling out. I would jump at the opportunity to back up Britney or The Spice Girls, it is my job and I am good at it.

Selling out IMHO is creating music that you feel is not good and that you do not like solely because it would sell.
