I don't know about the phone app, but on a laptop you can just hover the pointer over the user's avatar to bring up more information about the user along with a variety of options, one of which is "Send direct message."

Not giving me the option. Guess I need time on the forum to open permissions? I found the option to send messages in the drop-down bars, but I'm just not allowed. Thanks for the reply tho!
