Send/Return

Hello TalkBass friends . Merry Christmas and Happy New year!I have a Mesa Subway 800+ and have a WD-800 on order.. They will be A/B/Y ed through a Radial pedal into two separate 4x10 cabs . My question for the Mesas ( and heads in general) is this. What is this the optimum way to use the tube gain in the front end of the WD for the gain section of the Subway ?Both are great sounding heads as a stand alone ..but , if I wanted to try this ?.I don't use the loops on my heads and it's probably a simple set-up but I am inexperienced with them( loops). All suggestions are welcome..Thanks and I hope we all have another great year!

Your A/B is not. You want (A+B)/ B if I am reading you right.

That is a whole new ball of wax.

I think you need more gear to get it done and it's gone bedtime. For gear you haven't got yet I think just A/B the rigs as is and then worry about preamps.

Mesa might have the WD pre in a pedal in a bit ?

You need a stereo ABY, that is to say 2 ABY operated by the same switch. Call the channels L and R. Bass to LY. LA to Subway in, LB to WB in. At the same time, Subway FX Send to RA, WD send to RB, then RY to the FX return of whichever power stage you want. Of course you could go via the Y of a second mono ABY, then A to FX return of Subway and B to FX Return of WD...

I don't think that is going to do what he wants. There won't be much difference in sending the output of a preamp across to the opposite power stage aside from it can be a different cab.

I am glad I went to bed instead of trying to nut it out last night!

Coffee not kicked in yet. I think a mixer is going to be needed. Or do what I do, play one and be happy.

But you will have to route to one or the other power amp. If you want the same power stage for both preamps then RY goes back to the one, but he did explicitly state two separate cabs...

Just play one head into your cabinet and then play the other head into your cabinet. Never connect 2 amps to the same cabinet.

There's more difference than just the preamps. Don't make the comparison more difficult than it needs to be at can easily become misleading.

That's not anything like his proposal. He wants to use two amps each with their own cab but also the option to rob the preamp of the WB to ginger up the D800 side.

I agree it's way more effort than lIkely it's worth but he already spent up large on two primo Mesa amps. I think that rates a solution that is safe from blowing up both amps by mistake.

Madness...sheer madness!:thumbsup::thumbsup: Finding a stereo ABY pedal is not easy...I gave up :bawl:. I was excited to find this product for a different sort of madness: → T-REX EFFECTS ← Pedals for guitar and bass players! unfortunately discontinued and reviews suggest potential reliability issues :poop::poop::poop::poop:.

Did you look here...

You could hook that up

Bass > WB input
WB send > L in
'A' out L > WB return
'A' out R > R in
'B' out L > fresh air
'B' out R > D800 in at very low level.

I can't promise the D800 front will be happy with fx send of WB, check @agedhorse

Also, the day you send an output back up another output could get very expensive.

This is doable, but it is a lot of work with very little tangible benefit. In all likelihood the send from one amp will overload the preamp from the other, resulting in a terrible tone. In addition, you're wiring in all kinds of fail points if this is a thing you intend on using at gigs.

If you're hell bent on trying it, hook it up at home without all the switching hardware and see if you get a superior tone. I suspect you won't. If it's the absolute sweetness, then revisit the rest of this thread.

The D-800 will not be happy with the FX send of the WB since the Fx send is full line level.

These kinds of experiments, when they go wrong, are not covered under warranty. There are reasons why we suggest what we do.
