I want to put together a dual use system to (1) reord at home and at practice and (2) drive my floor monitors (1 pair Yamaha BR12M [12", 300w @ 8ohm] which I also use as home monitors on pole stands.
I play in a duo with a singer/keyboard player who has her own PA system but its not powerful enough to drive my floor monitors. (Which I drive with a hi-fi stereo Parasound preamp and a 50lb. Aragon 2 x 200w @ 8ohm amp. This stuff is not practical to use for a gig.)
I also want the abilty to record at home or at practice and download onto my PC's hard drive. I don't need more than 4 chanels in, but I'm probably going to have to get like 8 or 12. I would like USB out, but I can make do w/o it.
My budget is $600.
After some investigation, it appears that I can achieve my goals with either:
> a powered mixer like a Yamaha EMX 312SC ($500 @ GC) or
> a seperate mixer (like a Mackie 802VLZ3 for $200 or a Yamaha MG82CX for $160) plus a stereo amp like a QSC GX3 for $289 or a Crown XLS 1000 for $300.
Any advice as to a powered mixer versus a mixer + amp?
