rtav, that was the best post I've seen in awhile. Very eloquent and thought out. I'm just having a hard time with the fact that threads like this are even allowed. Asking advice on setting stuff on fire seems fairly inappropriate anywhere.
Thanks. What's next? The "I want to play my electric bass with a live rig in a downpour" thread? "How best to wrangle rattlesnakes while mastering galloping chops?" C'est la vie.
And for callofcthulu above, you overreach. I'm not trying to change his mind - quote where I state that. Just quote one line where I go "Don't do it!" (although that phrase appears in other posts, quite clearly [posts you don't reference], it does NOT appear in mine). So either you didn't read my post or didn't understand it.
By all means, he can soldier on and light the fire. Maybe it will be great, maybe it will end in an inferno. Maybe is all I say.
Here's what I ACTUALLY say, and what I conclude with (note this is an ACTUAL quote, elided for brevity): "Maybe EVERYTHING will go off perfectly. Maybe you will light the bass on fire... Maybe it will be the greatest show on earth, and maybe you will successfully avoid any flammable curtains, people, substances, laws, club owners, drunk patrons, etc., etc., etc. Maybe. But maybe not - and for what?"
My point was that he should THINK before doing something potentially horrible. He should ask some very serious questions (some of which present above). As I ACTUALLY say, if he goes on and lights it up and it rocks - OK (IMHO - "Jimi did it better"). I would caution anyone doing anything like that to THINK - THINK before you light your bass up in a crowded club for an effect. THINK. I guess that whole "THINK" thing bothers some more than others. "Hey maaaaaaan - it's ROCK N ROLL maaaaaaaan! Don't be such a DOWNER, maaaaaaaaaan! Yeah baby, just light it UP, let it BURN baby!"
