I've started double bass about 5 months ago and got a Shen SB200. The shop set it up for me with spirocores medium but they had too much tension for my beginners hands so I switched to Evah Weich. Recently I took the bass to a different luthier to have the endpin replaced since the plasticky original one rattled. I also asked him to get the action as low as possible to make playing easier. I find it hard to get the proper intonation on the E and A strings. He got it down to 5mm at the G string, but A and E are about 11mm to 12mm off the fingerboard. It plays much better but I still have to fight the E string. He told me he'd have to reshape the bridge, file the nut and dressup the fingerboard if I wanted that fixed. I trust his advise but am just wondering if this is one of the things you're better off doing once you develop a playing style.
my teacher is classically trained so I am playing almost exclusively with the arco at this point. although I eventually want to dab on Jazz pizzicato.
If I get this work done now, would I have to do it again when I change focus from orchestra to Jazz playing or there is a way to setup so it works well for both styles?
