Seymour Duncan Powerstage 170 for bass?

Hey team,

Pretty much what the title says - would the SD Powerstage 170 (kicks out 170w at 4ohms) move enough air to be worth playing bass through?

I play a six-string in a fairly loud mathy rock/core-ish band and I’m looking for a compact live rig as I live in ground zero of a massive urban wasteland and I travel to all my gigs on public transport.

Currently going direct most of the time from a Tech21 FlyRig which I’d run in front of the Powerstage.

Can’t currently test one in meatspace to get an idea of how it reacts and how loud it gets with low frequencies so any personal experience is appreciated.

Or, any other compact power amps that might do the trick and be better?
Criteria are small, light, and relatively inexpensive as my budget isn’t huge.

You could use a Rumble 500 head. The Powerstage uses a smaller power amp module from the same company (Bang & Olufsen), so you're getting more for your buck with the Rumble head. It's not much bigger too.

I have no experience with the SD Powerstage 170, but for the low range of a 6-string, I think you would run out of headroom pretty quick.

I would look at something like the Quilter Bass Block 800.

I've done a Flyrig into a PowerStage before, into a Mark Bass cab, and it was loud for me. It is a great setup.

I run a Mesa Subway preamp pedal into the Powerstage 170 into two 12 inch cabs and the output volume is fairly loud in a band mix with the the volume control between 11:00 and noon. I would like to try the Powerstage with the Mesa Subway 15 cab as a single cab solution but that would be 8ohms and I'm not sure if the Powerstage would put out enough power in that configuration.
