SFX Thumpinator vs: Broughton HPF Pedal

This is not like the Thumpinator. It's 12db/oct versus the Thumpinator's 24db/oct, and features an adjustable knee frequency whereas the Thumpinator is fixed.
With a 12dB/oct slope it has to be less expensive. For what I need it to do, the Thumpinator does exactly what it has. No change in sound, only freed from unnecessary lows.

SFX recommend putting the Thumpinator is at the very start of your signal chain.

I find it works very well there: with the low end crud removed and no impact on my tone, next in line is my comp which can then work just on > 30 Hz + of the frequency spectrum rather than needing to expend wasted effort on the sub audio.

Net result, my comp (a simple one knob TC Spectracomp set with dial set at between 9 and 10 o'clock i.e. between 3 /10 and 4 / 10) seems to be more effective and beneficial than I have ever found a comp to be and is now also an 'always' on pedal and there's a 'sheen' to my bass tone that I really like.

BROUGHTON AUDIO HPF = 12 dB per octave low frequency filter. The knob controls the cutoff frequency and ranges continuously from 25 Hz to 190 Hz.

=> smoothest and musical

SINE EFFECT HPF = 24 dB per octave low frequency filter. The knob controls the cutoff frequency and ranges continuously from 25 Hz to 400 Hz.

=> compromise ?

SFX SOUND THUMPINATOR = 36 dB per octave low frequency filter. The cutoff frequency is fixed at 25 Hz + buffer.

=> effective cutoff + buffer


Usage depends on where you place the filter in the signal chain, at the very beginning/end of the signal path, just like an EQ, to help the gear, before/after an octaver, to remove muddiness, to protect the speakers, to remove the sub bass as it only adds unnecessary energy to the total sound...

The Thumpinator is good but it would be even better with the cutoff frequency fixed at 35/40 Hz and personally, I prefer to have an HPF filter at the end of the signal path...

Afterwards, everything that happens after the HPF filter can generate new unwanted low/sub frequencies, most amps and speakers are designed to receive a wide range of frequencies and often, they already cut below 30/40 Hz, most sound systems/PA/FOH already have EQ and filters...

How does the thumpinator compare to the broughton bba?
I had both (not at the same time though). They both take care of the sub lows. Thumpinator has 36 dB per octave at 25 Hz and BBA takes care of the sub 20 Hz frequencies. BBA also filters out ultra frequencies above 20 kHz and has a great volume/clean boost control. I prefer BBA due to this and I combine it with Broughton HPF. BBA at the start of the chain and HPF at the end for fine tuning the low end. Perfection.

Several people have mentioned the mThump being a buffer. It's worth mentioning that all of these devices (when turned on if they have a switch) will act as buffers, and given the reputations of the companies, the buffers will all be quality. The comparison really comes down to the implementation of the HPF. The buffer aspect is a wash.

I have the bba. It’s the best pedal I own that I have no idea if it’s working or not. Lol

I definitely like an hpf at the end of the board though. I never knew about this thumpinator. But it sounds like the bba is a comparable pedal.
