Shaking a woman's hand.

I put a lot of stock in a hand shake. What's the proper etiquette for shaking a woman's hand in a professional setting?

1) Do you extent your hand first or wait for her to extend hers? When I was growing up in the south, we were told to wait for the lady to extend her hand first.

2) The grab. This is where I flounder. Do you go for the straight on man-grab, or do you do the under hand as if you were going to kiss the back of her hand?

3) Preasure. Do you apply the same amount of preasure on a woman's hand that you would a man's?


The grab is the biggest problem I encounter. Several times I've gone for the gentle underhand grab and had the woman going in for the man-grab and I end up looking like a limp wristed girl.

Old-school manners says "wait for the lady to extend her hand". However, in a business situation, or outside the South, you can probably get away with extending your hand first. Inside the South, always wait for the lady.

Grip and pressure...

I very much dislike having my hand shaken as though it were a wet rag, or as though it is some delicate thing that might break. I have a very firm handshake. Some men, and most women, try to shake my hand soft, and it always makes me feel awkward and uncomfortable. I'm not a china doll.
I'm not the Queen, and don't want my hand kissed. Give me a firm, confident handshake. Don't squeeze my hand 'til the knuckles crunch, but don't give me the wet dishrag, either.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. Like I said above though, it can bite you in the arse if they're Cherie and go in for the man-grab and all of a sudden the tables are turned and you're the girl in the situation - not good.

Well, I think I would grab her hand firmly, then use the newfound power over her body to flip her around so she is facing away from me and looking at the ground. Then, I would proceed into a gyrating motion and slap her behind a few times...

But...but...the soft handshake SUX!!! Its all smooshy and oookie and wimpy! I can't *stand* it when someone shakes my hand that way. Gives me the yucky-oookie-shivers in my stomach. And it makes me feel like they don't care enough to give me a good handshake; that they're just half-hearted.

Am I making guys freak out because I don't have a wimpy handshake?

When a Texas woman greets someone she knows, either IRL or if she's know them a while online, she give a great-big hug, and she squeals. So...when we meet, I will hand you earplugs, so you'll be prepared for the squealing.

I do not think about how I am going to shake someones hand. I naturally have fairly good manners, I just shake it however I happen to shake it at that moment.

I've never had a guy give me a wimpy shake, usually when I shake hands I stand up (if I'm sitting down) and I step into the handshake which I think automatically gives the signal that I'm not a wimp.

What's weird is when I meet Asian people. Do I bow? Shake hands? Shake hands respectful Asian-style? Exchange business cards? Offer them chopsticks??

Depends what part of Asia they are from.

I used to just go for the "high five", but then I moved to the New Orleans area. Here, unless it's a business situation, you do the cheek to cheek kiss. If it's a board meeting, sales call or you're getting sued, the regular man shake is the norm.
