Shane McGowan (The Pogues) RIP

Dead at 65. Too young, but given his lifestyle, hardly a surprise.
A great songwriter, and despite a pretty rough voice, a great performer.
The Pogues were surely the definitive Celtic Punk Rock band.

Here's a favourite of mine he wrote, a duet with Sinead O'Connor.
Ireland is running out of greats...:(

He had been in a wheelchair, in bad shape, for many years. His ‘rough voice’ was his trademark, it made their music more real, and while there was a sideways influence from The Clash, they were pioneers…no Pogues, no Dropkick Murphys, Real McKenzies, Young Dubliners, Flogging Molly or a host of other bands.
Ironic timing, this will be a little sadder this year…

It was bad enough with Kirsty.

Honestly, surprised he made it to 65, but RIP to one of the greatest.
yeah, I was in the ‘surprised he made it this far’ camp
Shane MacGowan died at 65 and that other guy at 100. The good do seem to die younger.
The Irish blew up my socials yesterday with posts about him. Best (and sagest) comment was probably "65 is 100 in Pogues years."

Played this last Saturday with a mate of mine and a guest cajon player, I’m on bass (obvs) found out a few days later he’d passed, dirty old town the pogues

That was written by Ewan MacColl, whose daughter Kirsty was the co-vocalist on “Fairytale Of New York”(and a witty writer on her own). He also penned the Roberta Flack hit “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”.
