Hi People

Just wanted to share a little practice session video, filmed on my iPhone 4 - as I always practice first thing and while this has few mistakes in I thought it'd be fun to share my progress playing over these bastard changes :)



I thought it'd be better posted here rather than recordings as this tune is more of an etude than something for soulful expression etc - let me know what you think

You are a very brave man taking on Giant Steps and posting your shedding for all to see-and I appreciate it very much!!! Very nice job, too. Here is one guy that continues to blow me away everytime I watch his video:

Pretty amazing player, thanks for posting the clip. I am not 100% wild about the tone myself, but it could also be the way it was recorded, so we should always be graceful! For my money, it doesn't get much better than this version of giant steps by Pattituci:

He combines monster chops with a lot of interesting musical ideas and sophistication.

Fabulous, the sequences, the time displacement, the lines, the feel, it's all there. Thanks for the link, I haven't seen this before, have I been living under a rock or something? :)

You know, I just came across this a few weeks ago and was totally floored. John Pattitucci is such a mellow understated guy that I had forgetten what a monster badA** he is. He doesn't get the press like Wooten or Wilkenfeld but he totally deserves it!

This solo is one of the most impressive thing in jazz I have come across in a while, the most impressive being Hiromi, but that is a different story!

Couldn't agree more JP tears it up but in the most musical way, I've grown to appreciate his playing more and more over recent years, I think his playing has actually got better, if that's possible.

Nice start me thinks
But I'd have practised this a little more before putting it on the tube, to be honest.No Disrespect, but not even the head is really on the button in terms of time and feel.
But maybe that's just me.
I enjoyed some of your other videos though!

To the OP (or anyone, really, who'd like the answer -- and I don't mean to hijack this thread, btw):

Not being much of a jazz soloist (yet), may I ask how you go about to starting to get ideas for how to solo over a tune like this? Usually I just hear bop renditions of it, and so much of what soloists like Coltrane, etc. do just flies right over my head.
