It is runaway inflation ... kinda like the late 1970s ... it happens when the government over spends
Employer gave a benefit (but the enrollment period was short ) of being part of the volume discount when COVID started. But I have not really used it much. I am not going to divulge how much the disparity is. Plus who knows if they will pull that benefit soon.
Cost shifting, very much like in a multi-payer healthcare system in some far way country we've never heard of or been to.
I would think you'd do better shipping them together disassembled, because if I'm not mistaken no small portion of the shipping whack is from the irregular size (length) of the assembled-bass package. (Happy to stand corrected if I'm wrong.)

First, there has been a surge in demand versus supply of refined petroleum.
And you aren't ok (YOU ARE NOT OK) with it taking 2 weeks to ship your package.
And if the bass arrives with a scratch on the case you'll claim damage.

I'm using a FedEx account to ship, and I drop the package off at a pickup location down the street from where I work.
I'm pretty sure that I'm paying nowhere near the expensive end discussed in this thread.

It can, that's not what's happening now and things are rarely that simple.
It also happens when government isn't taxing enough, overall, typically because it's taxing those with the most clout and power the least and not enough. It happens when government fails to enforce antitrust laws, allowing over-consolidation of whole industries, regional monopolies of freight railways for example. Lack of investment in infrastructure is another.
It happens for multiple reasons; sometimes for one, two, and three reasons at a time or all or nearly all of the possible reasons at the same time.

One thing we could do is be more careful and selective consumers who buy less stuff and chose more of the things buy with more focus on things that are more useful for longer; for a lifetime can be pretty cool. When you buy a bass or worse a big heavy amp head, voluminous and likely heavy speaker you have factor what's going to happen with that later down the line. Less stuff being shipped to and fro.
Buy your label from the carrier directly. If you buy it from a retail store for ups or FedEx you will pay more

The secret is to 1st buy a bass and save the box.
I actually have saved boxes - Broken-down and out of the way in the basement or garage, and invest in some really good carton sealing gum-tape.

My local center has been very accommodating. Just requested some boxes for shipping cabinets.
I recently had a FedEx ENVELOPE sent from California to Poland (10 years ago was about $25) and that was $155!
Package volume, regardless of how much air vs the contents you're paying to ship, certainly can matter.
That's a very interesting idea you have that could inform a novel pricing strategy in listing and selling pre-owned basses. Offer the buyer a third option with corresponding pricing they can chose from.
I don't mind seating a neck back in the neck pocket and refastening it to a body; I'm going to check the setup and likely make adjustments or possibly redo everything myself when I get thing anyway. Unless I know the thing shipped with virgin strings I'm replacing those immediately too--I don't want to play on strings some else's grubby fingers have been all over, no matter who it was.
