Shopping Advice

Here's the sitch.

I used to play bass, but looking back I know I wasn't really that into it. However, over the last couple months, I've really got back into it.

Unfortunately the years in between have left my Squier Jazz bass is rough shape. Its now in the shop, but I was left with a "we'll do what we can" plus 2 weeks before its back.

Anyway, I obviously make more money now than I did then. So I'm not against getting something a little more expensive. I'm leaning towards the EBMM Sterling SB 4 string which is listed as $700(CDN) online, it may be cheaper in store. Thats about the max I'd spend. I was all into the fleabass, but I've heard a bunch of negativity surrounding that.

I'm waiting until Thursday(when the store is open late enough) to try some out, but if anyone wants to weigh in on some things I should look out for, that would be great.

My bass playing is influenced by Flea with a side of Geddy Lee , if that helps.

Thanks.

Also, for anybody has read this long, a question. Whats the deal with brands and which stores they're sold in. There are two big stores here(Toronto) and it seams that if one brand is in one store, it won't be in the other. Whats the deal with that?

Lots of questions there. You will either get the following answers vis a vis your bass selection. Choose one

1. Get what you like
2. Get an SX (or something inexpensive)
3. Get a Sadowsky (or something ridiculously expensive)
4. Get what I have

It really is sound advice to try a bunch and get what speaks to you and you can afford. Just remember that you are not goingtoget an accuate impression of what a bass is really all about from a brief trial in a store. Reject the obvious ones you don't like, but don't be afraid to pull the trigger on something you can afford and give it some time. Finding the right bass for you is an ongoing thing and your tastes will change as you progress as a player. Anyone who claims to have it figured out should go take a look in the TB classifieds sometime. Every one of those basses was an attempt that didn't succeed comepletely.
